UK: This would put it in the same category as heroin, cocaine and ecstasy.

It would mean tougher penalties for possession, and potential life sentences for suppliers and producers.

Police and crime commissioners are elected to hold forces to account in England and Wales,
but do not control criminal law or police operations.

At the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, a group of them argued new health data
on cannabis makes the case for re-evaluating penalties.

They say it is “time we realised that it is not just a little bit of weed”.

The Home Office said there were no plans to reclassify cannabis.

And cannabis campaigners have dismissed the idea as “crazy” and “dangerous”.

But David Sidwick, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset, said that cannabis
    was “driving harm” in communities.

“We’re seeing it because it’s a gateway drug. If you look at the young people in treatment,
the number one drug they are in treatment for is cannabis.”

Mr Sidwick, who used to work in the pharmaceutical industry, claimed that a “wealth of
new data” on the drug’s effects on health had come to light, which merited a “re-evaluation”.

He also said that enforcement needed to go hand-in-hand with rehabilitation and education,
but that reclassifying cannabis would provide clarity.

“There are so many crimes linked to drugs that, actually, by addressing this, by giving us this clarity,
it makes it clearer for our police to be able to do what they need to do.”

The penalties for possession of a Class A drug include an unlimited fine and up to seven years in prison.

Suppliers and producers can be sentenced to life.

Sentences for Class B drugs are up to five years for possession and up to 14 years for supply or production.

Peter Reynolds, the President of CLEAR, which campaigns against the prohibition of cannabis,
said the proposal to reclassify it was “completely crazy.”

He said the Commissioners were “promoting ideas which will increase crime, violence and child exploitation”.

“The idea of doing more of the same as the past 50 years, which has quite obviously dramatically failed,
is ridiculous. The only people who want this are ignorant politicians and
the people who sell illegal drugs, I’m crystal clear about that.”

In a recent letter to police forces, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said that drug-fuelled
crimes were not being taken seriously enough.

A spokesperson for the Home Office said: “There are currently no plans to reclassify cannabis,
which is controlled as a Class B drug in the UK on the basis of clear medical and scientific
    evidence of its harms.”

    here it is -
Would take 1,500 pounds of cannabis smoke to be lethal or fatal only if ingested within 15 minutes ...
Would take around 500 million pounds of plant matter to make that much smoke in weight, smoke's so lite etc... notice how so far the only actual printed news media is about smoking or smoke of the cannabis plant ??
the lethal dose 50 ( LD50) of cannabis is 50,000 to 1 . when compared to say alcohol the LD50 is 10 to 1 !
Edit - the more cannabis you ingest the more neuroprotection and anti oxidants you have available in your body to ward off disease and bad states of health
you can read about that in the only provable Biochemistry the US GOV has performed ( patented)
patent # 6630507 cannabinoids as anti oxidants and neuroprotectants ( notice THC is mentioned as protecting with Unwanted Euphoria ) ... only the folks making those tests see THC as unwanted , they chose CBD instead as the main compound to test while there are 150 total [hytocannabinoids made in the plant !! A whole damn lot more than THC and CBD plus all the non cannabinoid types like the smelly terpenes and the Flavones, Flavinoids ... cannabis is a Treasurer Trove of Medical compounds and can be tailored via growth for Differening Traits and outcomes ... spit on the seedling before it sputs , will give it your DNA if growing for personal use ... plant will grow with that info in its databanks LOL .. seriously though

  8. wild just wild
    out side the box thought
might just be the rest in the world looks at the USA ,not gov ,but state level ease of the plant, then they look at what is going on in our nation and say ,heck no we dont wont a bunch folks burning down shit , beating the aged in cross walks and the legal system turning eyes of all the maham for the team of politics whilst being stoned.
most always think the magic flower is a chill drug or medicine for many as myself , i dont get stoned but i do take a few hits under the influence of getting stoned , like 4 hits a day for sleeping medicine.
look outside your window and see if you see what i see , there just might be the age old factor of weed is more potent these days , might just be towards the violent side and the other nations dont want any part of it.
either way a feller or gal should do as he or she pleases, even driving down the road is a gamble these times

  9. I find it enjoyable to occasionally tear apart a news article like this one.

Mr Sidwick, who used to work in the pharmaceutical industry, claimed that a “wealth of
new data” on the drug’s effects on health had come to light, which merited a “re-evaluation”.

Like this new data? And how much in the way of pharmaceutical stocks does he own?

    “it’s a gateway drug."

It is the multi-drug street dealer that is the real "gateway"! When you buy cannabis at a legal dispensary, like we have in California, there are no other drugs to buy! You'd be able to buy an amazing assortment of cannabis buds, edibles, extracts and usually pipes, bongs, T-shirts and rolling papers, but NO other drugs!

"If you look at the young people in treatment, the number one drug they are in treatment for is cannabis.”

Because (a) Cannabis is (rightly) more popular than other drugs. And (b) Kids who are busted are often given the choice of rehab or jail. Which would any sane person choose? :judge:

“There are so many crimes linked to drugs that, actually, by addressing this, by giving us this clarity,
it makes it clearer for our police to be able to do what they need to do.” :cop:

Common prohibitionist tactics- lumping cannabis in with hard drugs that can kill and are very addictive. Ignoring that crime and hard drug use go down where cannabis is legal.

“In a retrospective analysis comparing crime data in neighbouring American states, Washington and Oregon, revealed that reported rape, property crimes, and thefts all decreased by 15–30%, 10–20%, and 13–22% respectively after legalization in Washington.” from “International Perspectives on the Implications of Cannabis Legalization: A Systematic Review & Thematic Analysis” (2019)

  12. I think the more correct answer is the dinosaurs in power with outdated beliefs have not been claimed by the reaper. Yet.

The old stand in the way for progress and new things.

While also demanding respect for themselves and an applause for being the generation who single handedly destroyed alot of our ecosystems.

  13. You hit the nail on the head with that one. I saw one debate the House or Senate, can't remember which, had about global warming. One old goat that needed to retire, that was Republican held up a snowball he got outside and said there is no global warmer because there is snow. Duh!! Why do you think Alaska Fisheries had to cancel crab fishing this year? And possibly, forever. The population has dropped from 8 billion to 1 billion in a matter of one year. They had to cancel King crab season and Snow crab season. The waters are warmer in Alaska now than ever before and the crab depends on freezing water to survive. I suspect the Earth won't be able to support human life before long.
