Now go and do my evil bidding.

Dear [Decision Maker],

Please support the pending bill by Rep. Barney Frank to repeal the infamous section 484 of the Higher Education Act, which delays or denies federal financial aid for college to would-be students because of drug convictions. While the law was partially scaled back last year, its fundamental problems remain:

* The law punishes people a second time who have already been punished once by the criminal justice system.

* The law interferes with the process of recovery from, or prevention of, substance abuse, by eliminating one of the primary positive alternatives available to young people.

* The law is economically discriminatory, punishing only those would-be students who fall on the lower end of the economic spectrum.

* Though not racist in its language, the law extends the unresolved disparities that plague the criminal justice system (such as racial profiling) onto the higher education financing system.

Please do the right thing and make sure that the drug provision is repealed in full during the current session of Congress. This is your chance to reopen the doors of opportunity for students who have had them closed for the last seven years.
