planting near stream

  1. i was wondering if i planted some plants by a stream if they would get enof watter on there own without going to watter them every day. anyone ever plant by a stream at all?

  2. I have a friend that plants on the edge of a creek. Here is what he does. Digs a regular size hole, then takes a set of post hole diggers and subs a hole down in the middle of the regular hole about 2 or 3 more feet. Now he fills the sub hole with chopped straw and dont pack it, this lets water seep in, and the tap root will find the water. Then put a few sticks over the straw to keep the weight off. Just fill the regular hole with your own soil or whatever. This will work ive seen it done. I know the tap root had to be 4-6 feet deep. He never waters! :)

  3. thats a pretty good idea, but around here streams and creeks and stuff attract people. I would put it near a stream (to get water from) but not next to a stream.

  4. It depends how far down the water table is. Only way to tell I suppose is dig a hole and see.

  5. I good idea I heard is if your planting next to a stream get a bit of the soil and water from that area and when your germinating your seedlings use the same water and soil from that area. The plant should be used to it and will make the transplant less traumatic.
