Hey guys and gals. I'm just trying to map everything out for my first grow. I had a hard time deciding between doing a mini fridge micro grow, or investing in a grow tent. After research i have decided on a small grow tent to start out with. I have my own house but I'm not going to dedicate a whole room to this since I'm just growing one or two plants for personal use. I plan on getting some White Widow and maybe some C99 if the WW goes well.

For starters I will need a grow tent that will hopefully fit into my closet. My main priority will me size and odor control. I'm prepared to spend $500ish on odor control alone, as I don't want my room smelling of weed. I'm at a complete loss as to which fan/ducting size and filter to get. Could somebody recommend something? Also what tent would fit my needs that could fit into an average closet without poking out or standing out? As for a fan goes is there anything that is relatively quiet? I also don't want something that would attract attention if I have friends over etc.

Finally as for lighting, I'm leaning towards a single 400HPS light. Is there anything about these lights I should know about? Such as heating issues as I hear that these can get quite hot.

Those are pretty much the main concerns I have when it comes to this grow. I already have the number one rule down: Tell nobody!

Thanks for any help and happy growing!:smoking:

  2. What size is your closet?

  3. I would probably recommend 2 trash can grows or a Rubbermaid grow but if your feeling the "tentish" feel....

It will be hard to grab a tent that size... the smallest ive seen is 24in~

Its fairly easy to build a perfect set up your self thou, they even sell premade zipper tent wall things.....HTG Supply - Tarp Zip Up

That and some panda plastic + a little negative pressure + carbon scrubber + ona gell = no smell and perfectly sized for your closet.

In a tent that size I would say a cool tube(cools the hps bulb) is 100% necessary for a 400w thou

If I were you I'd forego the tent & just outfit the closet for your grow. The simplest and mosteffective way to vent this would be through the roof and into the attic. Just cut a hole through the drywall ceiling. You'll want to build a small open ended box to place in the attic to keep your insulation in place & out of your fan. Mount this securely between a couple of roof trusses using 1X4 boards & 1&5/8" drywall screws. To keep the noise down you can mount your fan and filter combo in the attic.
SusanC also had a great suggestion for the cooltube reflector, that's a gottahave for a closet grow.
A 250/400W switchable HPS ballast would be perfect for your closet space. You're essentially at 8 sq. ft. total, and a 400W closet grow is about all you'll want to try. You could even "half" the closet with a sheet of panda film & use the 250W mode over a 2X2 sq. ft. area. This would let you get comfortable with your ventilation, odor control & cooling before trying the jump to 400W. Lots of flexibility with that approach.
Either way, 250W or 400W, you'll need a high pressure sodium bulb for the blooming / bud phase, & a metal halide for the initial vegetative growth stage. Be sure the ballast you purchase is capable of running both types of bulbs. Metal halide conversion bulbs (designed to run in an HPS ballast) are one easy way to do this.

Best advice I can give you - plan your work, sketch your plan, think it through from seed popping to final flowering and harvest. There are lots of decisions to make, and "making" yourself think this through on paper will save you a lot of headaches later. Lights, grow medium (dirt, organic, hydro), ventilation (you're on your way there already, smart move!!!), working access room, how to trim / top / train your plants during their vegetative growth state, security, what type of nutrients to use, yadda yadda yadda, you get the picture :D
Spend a lot of time reading here. Buy a couple of books. Become hooked.

Now, just do it!!! Bestaluck to ya.
