You were just over thinking it because you were most likely high when watching it and you can easily spot the "fakeness" in acting when you're high cause weed unviels the truth. Happens in pretty much anything you watch.

I think this is to send home the point that although Saul kept him around and shooed away the oxy guy to show that he liked Dale, but he's still a dealer at heart and still not technically a friend until the shit hits the fan.

i think the idea was that pineapple express is extremely potent and because of that they cough.

also every time i watch pineapple express its pretty much like what my old dealer was like.
