Exactly, that's all that matters. Do everything you can do to make sure it doesn't go on your record. This is what the lawyer is for, they can make deals; like no shopping at Wal-Mart for a year, etc.

You definately don't want it on your record...imagine how embarassing that would be to have to explain on a job application that you got caught at a Wal-Mart brushing your teeth illegally. It doesn't matter if it costs you a bit extra because further down the road, that conviction might keep you from making money. Just be smart about how you go about it.
i could just picture this "lost prevention agent" yelling at you "im gonna teach you a lesson son!" for stealing $9 worth of toothpaste with his back turned to 5 people just walking out carrying flat screen tv's, xbox's, etc.. like its nothing. lol just a funny image i have in my head
