Petitions to Legalize Marijuana, Limit Smoking Fail in Nevada

  1. CARSON CITY, Nev. Backers of Nevada petitions to legalize marijuana and limit smoking in public places are vowing to fight a ruling that they failed to submit enough signatures to force the Legislature to act.

That's after Secretary of State Dean Heller ruled yesterday (Monday) that the three petitions were dead.

He relied on a legal opinion from state Attorney General Brian Sandoval that the initiatives needed 83-thousand-156 signatures to qualify.

That's 10 percent of the vote in the November second general election.

The American Cancer Society and the Marijuana Policy Project say they were told they needed 51-thousand-337 signatures to qualify.

All three signature drives exceeded that number.

A group behind another anti-smoking initiative -- called the Clean Indoor Act -- say they'll probably just circulate another petition.
