Perlite Vs. Vermiculite

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by HondaTom, Feb 26, 2008.

  1. Ive researched both. Ive found that Perlite, and Vermiculite are very similar. But, the difference being that Perlite doesnt hold much water, and Vermiculite does. Does anyone know which is more desired for growing MJ? Thanks in advance.

  2. Not sure which is more desired if you had to pick only one, however perlite is more commonly used imo.
Ive known people to use both too.

  3. perlite worked great for my outdoor grow last year. I noticed it kept the soil by the roots moist enough so i didnt have to water as in previous years. This year I will try more perlite mixed in as well as drip bags and or water crystals

  4. I am a firm believer in using them both.

Perlite is used mostly for drainage and will not absorb much water or nutrients.

Vermiculite is used for water retention and can absorb twice its weight in water and nutrients and is also a source of trace elements and a soil buffer.

They both have substantial benefits in the soil mix.

  5. Yea, I noticed Perlite is alot more commonly used.

  6. I was planning on just using a 2 part peat moss, and 1 part vermiculite in my grow. This is my first one btw.

  7. Yes perlite is used much more because most people are unaware of vermiculite and its benefits.
You may want to consider adding some compost and maybe a little lime to that soil mix because peat moss is very acidic.

  8. Would I be able to get those items at Lowes, Home Depot, or Walmart?

  9. Should be able to, think I saw it last visit to them. Or at least it will be mixed into potting soil.

  10. I would stick with perlite. It is pH neutral, whereas vermiculite can vary in pH during your grow.
