People becoming possessed?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by ARlexington, Feb 15, 2010.

  1. Do you believe that people can become possessed by some sort of spirit? And once that person has had an exorcism and the spirit is released or "cleansed" that some essence of that spirit will forever be with you and you would view the world differently, perhaps a mindset from whoever inhibits that person's beliefs?

And does evil really exist? Or is it something entirely made up from your imagination?

  2. It seems like I've talked to a lot of baby boomers who claim they were possessed or knew someone who was but have never spoken to someone under 35 who said the same thing.

  3. First off you have to believe in spirits to be possessed by them, so that's a debate right off the bat. If you believe in spirits, then why can't they possess you? I don't believe in spirits, so I don't believe in possession.

As far as evil existing... there are different concepts of evil. If there is good there has to be bad. If you can commit good deeds, you must be able to commit bad deeds. Claiming evil is it's own seperate identity (Lucipher maybe?), however, would be farfetched in my mind's eye.

  4. mental disorders...

  5. idk about spirits but maybe influence from energies seems for logical? still not that logical but more so than spirits. but "spirits" are supposed to be energies so i dont even know

    most likely this

  6. I'm with this, as well. The baby boomer comment I made still confuses me though.

  7. baby boomers were known to eat copious amounts of hallucinogenic substances...I SEE A CONNECTION

  8. Possession was an archaic understanding of mental illness. Humans generally are afraid of the unknown, and to cope with it, they usually grab unto shallow superstitions.

Evil does not really exist, it is just a concept in our mind. Just like letters of the alphabet...

  9. True, everything that has a motivation for a particular goal will attempt a means to reach it, thus an entity's desire is justified by self, meaning inherent evil cannot exist; at least from a logical viewpoint. You are only classifying what you subjectively see in relation to your own morals as good or evil.
As for the possession thing, a variety of things can be blamed. Unpleasant spirits, energies, the voluminous array of strange phenomena depicted in the media coupled with a mental disorder etc.

  10. so weird that you made this thread, cause i think my best friend is currently possessed.

i don't really wanna go into it any further though. i'm legit creeped out by it. :(

  11. Isn't there evidence of brains forming completely different personalities (in each seperated lobe) in patients that have endured lobotomies? I think I recall that from a pysch class, but I could be wrong.

  12. according to what i was told before my lobotomy - there is a chance of personality changes-
from minor to complete- depends opon the individual and which part of the brain is removed....my case it was my entire right temporal lobe
test they did before hand showed that part was never working right to begin with....
