Pascals Wager

  1. Can anyone explain this to me? i've read the wikipedia article but its bit over my head. anyone wanna take a shot?

  2. Basically, Pascal thought like this: either God exists or God does not exist. If one lives believing that God does not exist, but turns out to be wrong (God does exist) then one will be cast into hell. However, if one lives believing that God does exist, and God actually does exist, one will enter heaven. If one lives believing in God, but God does not end up to be real, then nothing was lost.

Pascal essentially said, why not believe in God? The worst that can happen is you turn out to be wrong and nothing happens. This is opposed to believing God does not exist, in which case the worst that can happen is God actually does exist, and hell is where you'll go.

  3. but if there turns out to not be a god then the pious life is a wasted one. no?
