Parental Disapproval Of Ganja

Discussion in 'Beginner Cannabis Consumption & Tips' started by bud_s_moker, Jun 29, 2014.

  1. For the past year I've smoked weed on and off. For a month or two it was near every day. The rest of the time it was weekly or bimonthly.

My parents scolded me for hours when they caught me high after a smoking session. They told me how weed is bad for you (obviously), and I lost their trust for a while, and I still don't think I have it back (some 6 months later).

I'd like to think I'm a fairly intelligent fellow, I got into a top college, I'm a polyglot programmer, and I got straight A's my entire life (not that grades mean much).

But my parents refuse to listen to logic and reason, every time I kindly ask them if I can smoke weed, they tell me "It's ILLEGAL!!!!! I don't want you ruining your future!!!". When I ask them why they think it will ruin my future, they start calling me a weed addict, among other not-so-friendly names. In other words, they resort to logical fallacies.

These are the same parents who will, if I ask for a stiff drink of whiskey, will gladly oblige me and give me around 3-6 beers worth of whiskey. They tell me "here's a LEGAL alternative to that horrible drug, marijuana".

I'm 18 and going to college in the fall, I should be able to make my own decisions, screw where I live or whomever is paying for my education. I shouldn't have to sacrifice my views for money.

Is there any specific phrase, essay, article, or fact that I could use that would shut them up and let me smoke pot?

  2. With parents like those it'll be really hard to swing their mindset at all. I suggest you say ""fuck it, if they're just gonna be ignorant im gonna get my own house and do what I want' this site is excellent to bring facts to them http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_faq1.shtml

  3. To fair, they make a point. It is illegal and if you get caught there can be some serious consequences. You get busted and you can say goodbye to any grant money for school. You can lose scholarships too.  It's a reason for good colleges to deny you, or kick you out. If you get busted driving you could lose your license and get your car impounded. And a conviction can put you at a serious disadvantage in the job market.

Now I'm not trying to convince you not to smoke. But please keep in mind that your parents love you, and their concern is not completely misguided. So don't get in the mindset of fuck them. That's dumb. And surely don't give up the chance at a college education just to smoke weed freely, that's even more dumb.

Unfortunately, you're also not likely to change their minds. You could try, but ehhhhhh, not terribly likely. My advice to you is to keep it on the down low. Do what you want, but don't keep shit in their house, and don't come home high. Go hang out with your friends and just hang out long enough for your high to wear off. This way, you can have your fun, and get your parents off your back.

Tell them if they're too ignorant about something their own govt used to propagandize them about, then so be it.

Tell them caffiene is a 10x worse drug than any compound in cannabis.

The only physical downside to smoking cannabis is the smoke of burning plant matter in your lungs. If its the physical part that they're scared about, just tell them you can eat edibles, vape, dab, timctures, etc. The only thing harmful about it is inhaling burning plant matter.

I'm in the same boat I feel if I try to have a talk with my grandmother about it no matter what I say it will just go in through one ear out of the other it fuckin sucks

  6. I've been an regular Toker for about 8 or 9 years and an everyday one for the past 5ish. My lungs are fine, better than some people who don't smoke haha.

The only effects I've noticed are with my memory and speech. My short term memory is totally fucking shot and lately I've noticed I've devolved a small stutter sometimes, like I'll repeat a word for no reason. Not all the time but I'm pretty sure it's from all the weed. Worth it though in my opinion haha fuck a memory who needs it

  7. The only way you'll end up changing their minds is if you succeed. I'd keep it on the DL and just continue your success. Once you complete college then you can tell them and prove that its not a detriment to your success. Everybody wins.

  9. Tell them "That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard, here...Take this fuckin' computer, jump onto fuckin' Google, type in 'Marijuana studies' and learn something instead of looking all goggle-eyed at cat pictures."

Your parents are the epitome of 'Reefer Madness'.  Give them shrooms maybe it's the only way.

I made a post recently about this

I love anti marijuana people who base their arguments on legal status.
\nThe same people downing a 6 pack and taking a bunch of pills(that they don't know a single thing about where it came from and what's actually IN IT).  The same people that think smoking cigarettes is fine because it's legal, but marijuana is the Devil because it's illegal.
\nThe system is fucking broken and it's not illegal because it's harmful, it's illegal because of bullshit politics in a broken decade.
Legal status doesn't mean shit when it comes to your health.

  11. Given the description, it doesn't sound like these people are willing to listen to facts. They've fully internalized all the propaganda regarding cannabis and added the worry about the law (is the drinking age 18 where you are btw?) to a point where it looks like they're set in their views. The problem for them is that they no longer have the right or the ability to control your behavior. I agree with a previous poster: do what you want, leave them out of it, graduate, etc. and enlighten them years later if you feel like it. They're just wrong. I'd like to add that it's really kind of abusive to begin degrading your offspring as an addict when they are exhibiting no addictive behavior. They are trying to browbeat the guy. It's gross. It reminds me of wailing parents telling an educated atheist, "But you'll go to Hellllllllll!"
