"owning" a pet?

  1. I was just sitting around high as hell the other day and my cat came up to chill with me. i was tripping out just watching him cuddle up to me like his best friend.
i had never noticed before how strange the concept of a "pet" is. an animal just walking around in my house! who knows how he sees his situation, what he thinks of us humans that take care of him. i just want to get into that kitty mind of his. maybe he thinks he owns us! he's 14 years old. we're all he knows. what are we to him, really?
sorry if this is a hopeless ramble. i've just never critically thought about the concept of owning a pet like this. its quite bizarre!

  2. i think this all the time bro. all the time.

  3. Ditto.... pets are a crazy concept. My cat is 17, she's been around since I was 3. She probably thinks she's my mother.

  4. hahaha i've wondered this shit too:eek:

  5. Just as you see your surroundings man, animals live by instinct and first is food and shelter, when that's satisified it's playtime... Think about that you are just like a toy to her when she has freetime

  6. and i think you are missing out the.. shitting. It's the kittens that just shit everywhere :D (i have one kitten)

  7. You are friendly creatures that reside within his roaming domain, which is the area he feels safe in, and has a constant food supply at.

Don't be fooled into thinking you don't "own" him tho, and that he's merely a free spirit that chooses to chil with you. I'm positive you would battle anyone who tried to claim ownership of him, and take him from you, and that is in essence what ownership is.

  8. I think it depends on the animal. Like I see peoples dogs all the time that wait in the same position till the human returns, that to me seems like the human owns the dog. And I know some cats that will look at you with this look when your calling them, like...oh im so boss your calling me but I'm just chilling right here walking around in a circle, probably gonna lick myslef once then maybe just maybe I'll come to you. That to me seems like the cats the boss :p

    damn im high :/

  9. I fucking love chilling with cats when I'm high! :D

My girlfriend has 5 cats at her house, 1 of whom is a cat that my family took care of for like 2 months as a tiny kitten. All her cats are so cool and fun to just sit around and pet when we're high. They go crazy when you bust out the laser pointer though, its hilarious...Cats have such unique personalities and mannerisms and are very affectionate to those who show them love and respect.

This one goes out to all the felines:wave:

  10. to be honest, if a pet has been in your family since their birth, i beleive that thats exactly what they see you as. They see you as family. They dont know whats outside their little home and life, as they have never experienced it. And i think that people that keep the pet feel the same way. Ok fine, they might be considered a less important family member ( i would never kill my mother or brother for example just to be able to save my dog) but they are still family. Pets act as if they are a part of your family. They contribute in their own little ways, for example if a cat cuddles with you, they show you appreciation, or if a dog protects you, then they show love, yo unkow these kinda things.
but because the fact that they are not human beings, they cant contribute to the family as much as a human can. But they still try. sometimes they are nice, sometimes they are naughty.

Also people often talk about pets going bad. Like if a guy gets killed by his dog or whatever after 9 years together or these types of things. Yeah, well people do that aswell. parents kill their kids, kids kill their parents, and its not always out of hate. Sometimes its their fucked up way of showing their love or appreciation(dont get me wrong, im not saying its ok to kill your wife just to show her how much you lvoe her)

but i think people are starting t oget my drift.

and i believe that the term of owning a pet, is more a way of expressing the idea that you have a family member, which sometimes you have bought, or been given, that is not a human being, rather an animal. and if you really want to take the "owning" issue a bit further, its not hard t oargue that its actually our pets that own us. we have to get their food for them. We have to pay for their food. we have to pay for their medical bills. etc.

    so yeah :p

  11. We feed them
    We bathe them
We play with them when they wanna play
    We clean their shit.

Not only do they own us, we're their fuckin slaves

  12. fuck yeah!!:smoke:

  13. With cats and other animals, we are just friendly bigger animals that happen to give them food and shelter, play with them, etc... Two animals living in the same cave.

With dogs, I believe that more meaningful connections are possible, maybe due to the LONG history of domestication. My dog is more best friend or family member than pet. I have been involved with several types of service dog and the relationships they develop with their charges are so incredible.

  14. They are just living man. Its no different if they were in the wild. Its like a pack of wolves. Most pets see us as the dominate ones, though others who have no idea how to take care of their pets are seen lower creatures by their pets. Those are the pets that bite bark jump and all around are 'bad'

  15. same +rep

i always kinda feel bad for dogs and shit when i just see them gettin walked around on leashes in their black and white world

  16. I thought this was about animal cruelty because "owning" was in quotes as if there was some hidden meaning of the owrd..

    Yeah, I've owned a pet.

  17. i like to draw a distinction between pets that can survive without assistance, and those that cannot.

for example, my dog is a "working" class dog, in his physical prime. He's a skilled hunter/stalker, and often does so just for sport. He would naturally be able to find his own sources of food, and as such, I feel that I dont "own" him per se, rather, he's a family member that recieves a fair amount of assistance.

on the flipside, if I had some "toy" dog (if it fits in a purse/handbag, chances are it qualifies :D ), then the dog has no purpose, other than to be a decoration and/or companion....an accessory lmao. This is the type of pet one owns. My dog almost made a snack of someone's faux-dog this afternoon...people need to keep their defenseless "toys" on a leash lmao.

so basically, if it passes darwin's test, I dont think its "ownable" but if it would fail (and probably quickly) at natural selection, then you can own it, cause it wouldnt be there without you lol

  18. Sometimes I've felt bad for having my dog. I mean dogs are meant to trek miles with their pack on the search for their prey reinforcing their social bonds within their pack, not to sit around in my house all day alone doing absolutely NOTHING while I am at work and school. But whenever I am around I try to give her as much love and attention as I can.

  19. With cats I always got the feeling they were just friendly to me because I fed them and played with them. If they were big enough i'd have just been food.
    Cats that is, kittens rock.

  20. I also ponder this thought a lot when I'm baked.

I'll look at my dog and think to myself "Holy shit. I have a fucking ANIMAL (although domesticated) living in my house, and I take care of this thing."

It's one of the funniest/weirdest things to go into deep thinking about
