After a couple year hiatus from growing, decided to toss a couple beans in the garden for this summer. Something to keep me entertained while recovering from a major surgery. I am growing just two girls this year. Crimea Blue and Berry Bomb. Both chosen due to fungal resistance, and fairly early harvest date. This seems to be my biggest challenge in growing. Getting to the finish line without losing major harvest due to mold or bud rot. I will be using Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil and Advanced Nutrients Micro,Grow,Bloom fertilizer. I germinated the seed with the good ole paper towel method. Beans hit the soil on 4/21. I have a series of pictures that i will upload with my next post showing the girls from popping out of the soil to the present. I plan on updating from here to the finish line sometime in October. Here is to a great season and I hope a successful journal.
And you can see in these I have moved the girls into their next size pots. Over their life I will likely "pot up" 3-4 more times before their final container.
Watering day. Just water, no nutrients. I generally feed every other watering. Quite a bit of growth since last pictures posted. Trying to decide if I should top either or both of these. The Berry bomb has presented a 9 tip leaf. I always welcome any questions, comments and thoughts!
As I was walking my yard yesterday I noticed what appears to be powder mildew on blackberries. So in a proactive measure I am going to spray the backyard with neem oil. I dont want to have to deal with that PM later on my girls.
Feeding day. I decided to top the Crimea Blue. It was a coin flip between the girls. Not going to top Berry Bomb. So far so good. As branches start to grow I am weighing them to promote more horizontal growth. Sunrise is a bit after 5 and sunset is at 9. Upper 60's and partly cloudy most days.
The girls normally would get a watering today, but I am thinking about potting up, and so I want to make sure the soil is good and dry to make for easy transfer. Need to get the next size container to proceed. Thinking either tomorrow or later in the week when the weather is a bit warmer. Any thoughts on ideal "uppotting" conditions
Up potting day today. Pictures of the root ball for each girl. The girls were really dry, so they each got a quart of nutrient water and a bit later a quart of regular H2O. I will post pictures of the girls a bit later today after they rebound from the transplant. As always I welcome comments and thoughts.
Regular update...Noticing a bit more growth in the branches as they continue to get taller. Also brewed a batch of beer today.
Watering day. Each girl got a quart of plain H2O. When watering 90% of the water is poured around the perimeter of the container and the remaining 10% at the plant base. I was instructed to do this a couple years to promote the roots to expand out creating a larger root system. Thanks for visiting!
Hey man, looking good so far. Have you thought about possibly topping/FIMing your plants? You would get a lot more horizontal growth.
I topped the Crimea recently. On my next photo update hopefully it will be apparent. I have started training some branches as they get long enough to tie or weigh down. Appreciate your thought!
Feeding day. Both got a quart of Advanced Nutrients system. I also am giving them a Neem oil spray tonight. They both look good to me, but i am biased towards my girls. All input welcome.

Its a watering day today. Each got a quart of water plus a dosing Cal/Mag for good measure. Going to be a hot one today. Pushing 90, which is pretty hot for where I live. Seeing more branch growth than vertical which is fine by me.
As promised pictures from today. I may be "potting up" this weekend As I can see roots in the drain holes of the current containers.
What size are they going into? Or just straight in the ground? Canada Guy's UFO Grow Canada Guy's Indoor Garden 2018 Canada Guy's Outdoor Garden 2018
Next size container is about 5 gallon in size. They will end up in 15 gallon buckets. That way I move them under a cover as the season ends and the rains come. I dont have enough privacy in my suburbia for actual in ground planting. Thanks for asking.
