Well I sure am getting a late start to the season this year. I planted some Bodhi seeds today. (4) Chem91 x Skunk (4) Vintage Pakistani x G13 Hashplant. Also, a couple of autos. Haven’t planted any veggie seeds yet. Hopefully a few tonight. I did manage to get the raised beds covered in straw. Oh yeah, the greenhouse started going up today too.
Thanks man. I’ve been messing around with Shou Sugi Ban lately with cedar planters and raised beds too but they are all for sale. RD
Looking good RD,the scorched wood looks nice and rustic. What's up with Ariz ? I'm rebuilding the south wall on 1 of the hugels. I got 9-10 ft 2x8s ready for linseed oil. I was gonna use cement blocks but I had these 2x8s for years, leftover from when my dad moved, glad I remembered! Lol. I made a little pier form to connect the boards. It 3 kitty litter cans with 2- 2x4s , cans are tapered ,bigger end on the bottom and I'll put a 3/4" pvc pipe in the middle of 2xs to form a spot to put rebar into ground and pier . 4 piers, 6-80 lb bags concrete, 2- sons who go to the gym ,I'm ready. My girls are ready to be mainlined, except the matanuska thunderfucker in the solo cup lol. To be continued at timj's
Nice workmanship on the planters RD. I used that technique on pine in the past. But, I personally like the way cedar ages to that grey color.
I remember talking about mainlining with you. I tried a few outside last year. I didn't see a huge benefit in topping them. It is fun to change their shape and it kept me busy. But, with our short flowering season it really made little difference in yield or bud size. Trimming was a bit easier on the mainlines.
Nice man I dig the homemade piers. Jealous of the early start you get on me. Did you ever get chickens? I liked it well enough down in AZ. The economy didn’t seem all that great. Recreational weed but there was only one dispensary in a town of 50k. Odd coming from a place about the same size and there’s probably 50 or so here. Ultimately we decided it’s probably best to buy a chunk of land down there and build a small straw bale house. The area is very lenient when it comes to alternative building. RD
So much fun burning stuff though! Speaking of which I’m burning some of that Critical Purple Auto right now. I really like the flavor, nice work. Hopefully I got the name right this time. I even mucked up one of the Bodhi strains I just planted. It’s a Chem91 Skunk VA x Appalachia. High hopes for both of them. RD
Thnx man, no chickens yet, probably pick away all summer at getting the coop together . That bale house sounds great, you'll save on heating and cooling nicely. Dispensarys? What are those for ? Lol
I agree, it is fun burning the wood or distressing it in a number of ways. Happy to hear you're enjoying the Critical purple. I'm growing 5 auto flowers right now and that Critical Purple looks better than the other 4 breeders strains. I'm using the same exact seed starter and they will all be transplanted into the same soil in 10 gallon pots in a week or so. I'm saving the Bodhi strains for my indoor fall, winter, spring grows. That Chem91 Skunk VA x Appalachia sounds like an interesting strain.
Not to hijack, but do you guys think that burning tech would work for surfaces that get walked on? Like stairs and deck boards. I love the look RD Cheers Os
No worries man. I actually build fancy stair treads at my regular job and the shop next to us installs hardwood floors. These were the guys that turned me on to the idea. To get the.varying colors seems to only work with cedar. Other species it seems best to burn the shit out of it and go for the black color. This involves wire brushing afterwards. It also provides the most rot resistance and the wire brushing will give some traction.
I use beeswax/mineral oil for the planters. Polyurethane or whatever else you want to use would work too.
@Green Dragging I believe you were planning on building a greenhouse? Since I’m slapping this one back up and don’t have much growing at the moment I figure it’s a good time to talk about it. I deviated from standard framing for a couple of reasons and definitely lost some strength. My goal was to use the least amount of panels possible and lumber. I also wanted to be able to passively cool the greenhouse or at most use a simple box fan. ^^^ The only points where there is ground contact is the corners. I avoid even this by using tiles under the corners and they also help level the structure. You can definitely see how it would lose strength vs conventional framing. I think some steel L brackets would go a long way here. That lil 45 brace is doing a lot of work and are ugly. Speaking of ugly I gotta whitewash and clean up this look. Here you can see how the framing and the ‘intake’ for the passive cooling works. The walls are 8’ tall but I’ve left the bottom 2ft open. Wire mesh is placed along the bottom 2ft of the 3 walls on the interior. On the exterior another poly panel could be removed or added. I just use wood cut offs I have access to. Foam panel could be slipped in there too. Spring/Fall she gets boarded up. All summer she’s wide open. This shows how I hang the panels horizontal on the 3 sides. 2 panels are hung vertical next to the door. All in all this design only requires 15 panels. If situated properly the north wall doesn’t necessarily need to be poly panels reducing the number to 12. I have both polyvinyl and polycarbonate panels on this (or did). I gotta say the polycarbonate are far more durable. I would at least use them on the roof. This shows more ventilation above and through the door. Above the door is the perfect spot for a box fan blowing out. Hopefully you or someone else finds this helpful.
Hey RD, thnx for the info bud. I would of gotten back to you sooner but I got poked with a stick in my eye , scratched my eye good ,I got a patch on and it was hard seeing. I like the passive cooling idea. Im probably going to build mine on the back of my house ,Southside, I got brick on that wall, kinda hold the heat passively . I'm thinking the interior space will give me 5' x12' with 2x4 walls. Do you think 5' is big enough?
Yea, we know what Buzz seekers do with Kilz. The old timey oil based original packs the best punch. So I hear.
Right on. I’m not sure if you’re wanting to grow cannabis or veggies in there? Either way I think you could make it work. Cole crops year round man.
