Out of control!

  1. OK, it's my first grow and I was so happy to see the plants shooting up that I've just realised I've run out of room for them and I've only just started them on flowering. From what I've read they get massive when flowering starts and mine are already brushing the ceiling! (I'm lighting them from the side in a corner of my attic)

So what I need to know is how much do I tie down and how much do I chop off? Which bits should I chop? I don't mind sacrificing a bit of the harvest as long as I can still get in there (space is getting tight!) For scale, the plants are a metre high from the soil to the tips.

On the plus side, I've solved the problem of overheating simply by having the light on at night.

    Advice much appreciated

  2. LST them. If you do it quick enough, you will get larger yield too, and you can make the plant look really cool. Read DierWolf's guide in Absolute Beginners - it's very informative.

  3. When you switch to flowering, the plant goes into it's "stretch" phase, where it often doubles it's height (some even report triple sizing).

That said, you've got your work cut out for you. Train it and train it as hard as you can without killing it. I think you may be past the point where your training can still be "low stress," it's time for discipline, heh!!!

If you can possibly continue the vegetative phase a little longer, I'd recommend topping them, taking the two growing tops that result and training them straight out, the way little old ladies grow tomatoes along fences.

As for chopping them, you'll have to chop the parts you need most,... the growing tips.

As for the compromise you find between how much you bend and how much you chop, it'll sure be fun to watch. Keep us posted and good luck!

  4. Yeah, don't chop them. Just train them :). Make it snappy though, or you may break something, or just not be able to train them at all!

  5. You can still train in flowering. Granted it'll stress the plant more, but go ahead and start bending them over. You'd probably be able to get those tips down in a matter of days. Don't go too fast, as it's not worth losing a main cola .

    Good luck and keep growin

  6. I had the same issue with my plant, just grew too big. I went to a hardware store and bought the tallest dowel rods I could find, whittled down one end so that it would stick in the soil better. I then put dowel rods in the soil on the outskirts of the pot, I then pulled the top of the stem over as far as I could without snapping it. After that I simply secured it to one of the dowel rods with some twine. It's been a little over a month since I did this and it's looking wonderful (I've had to tie it down a few more times). The bud sites that were once shaded and kind of shitty looking are all turning into main colas. It's kind of cool, I have this tall plant with all these colas sticking out off the top, :)

You can look at some pictures of what I'm talking about in this thread
(I'll try to get some new pics up soon, I bought a new camera and I don't have a memory card reader for it yet)

    Good luck!
