I'm sure most of you have heard of Ouija boards/talking boards/spirit boards before, if not actually personally had an experience with one at some point. If you haven't please refer to the following:

Continuing, I've been working a job cleaning out a house with a few buddies for the past few days. Some hermit who was born in 1917 lived in this house until he was recently hospitalized with a debilitating and very likely fatal condition. The family ordered us to trash every single item in the house so they can resell it, and that we can keep anything we find if we so desire. Obviously we found an old ouija board.

Myself and another friend tried testing it out on our lunch break but got no response and no movement from the planchette. I've successfully used a ouija only once before in my life when I was young, but I have a driving passion for all things occult, so I'm going to take this board home and try to freak some of my friends out with it. Maybe even receive responses from the owner of the house after he passes away. Or maybe even contact ZOZO...

So what do you think of these boards? Are they truly portals of communication between worlds? Or are they simple parlor games?
Many skeptics claim these boards can be parsimoniously explained through the psychological phenomenon known as the ideomotor effect. Do you lend any credence to this explanation? Why/why not?

If anyone has ever had experiences with a Ouija board, please do share. If this thread begins to pique enough people's interest I will gladly post the results I receive from the board I've found.

  2. Ouija boards are bullshit.

  3.
Okay, care to elaborate on that a little bit?

  4.
Most of the stuff you hear about it are from secondhand sources and/or movies and television. You never hear about stuff happening to someone close to you, it's always someone close to someone who is close to them.

  5. Blindfold your users.

5 bucks says you wont get any messages.

Ouija boards dont work without the eye controlling the hands.

    Try it.

Youll be lucky if the "spirits" land on one letter.

  6. We had one when I was a child.  Nothing ever happened.

  7. Jumanji is way better...

I have a funny story, kinda, about the board.

Tried one at my friends house, said someone by the name of G will die in a week. His gramma passes 1 week later. Of course she's old and probably was her time anyways.

My other buddy throw away his board, his mom asks me why he's throwing away that game set, I explain what happened, so she says to me 'I'm going to buy another set, remove the plastic and replace it'. Fucked up mom.

True, but most =/= all. You're generalizing an entire experience based on negative results and excluding positive results.

    Who invited middle school?

Very interesting idea for a control study. I will definitely try this, thanks for the idea!

Reported, get out of my thread if you're going to spam shitty memes rather than contribute.

Very intriguing. Perhaps a coincidence, but who's to say it's not something more? That mom sounds kinda whacky to be honest, lol.

  10. Cheap Victorian parlour trick

Utter nonsense ,as is all that paranormal crap.

  11. My mom's side of the family is very superstitious and they've dabbled in witchcraft. It's all bullshit.

  12.
I thought my meme was relevant :confused_2:

I believe that Ouija boards can summon spirits just as good as this childhood game:

Like CMGarcia said : all first hand accounts not to mention some peppered in Hollywood magic.

I have nothing against these claims, you may be completely correct. But do you have any personal experiences, stories, etc you can relay that will back up these thoughts? I'm quite interested in hearing both sides of this issue.

They blind fold people who created their own ouija board, and turn the board upside down. None could hit a letter. Pretty funny if you got some time to kill.

  15.
I don't have any personal experiences since I never bothered to do stuff like that. I used to be superstitious when I was little too so stuff like that scared me and I stayed away from it.

  16. I'm with the cheap parlor trick crowd.

It's a fun game for teenage sleepovers, nothing more. :p

  17. It's always going to be your m8 pushing it.
Do you believe in fairys and dragons to.

not alot of people know that I don't know that, but I bloody well don't!

I don't really think experience is important in debating the authenticity of ouija boards.

As with any other myths that can't be proven (from loch ness monster to unicorns to the existence of a god), proof is not required to argue that this claims aren't accurate, the burden of proof lies on the believer.

Since there is no actual scientific evidence that leads to the belief that spirits do exist, I am going to have to conclude that although it can't be proven that they don't exist (in the same way that you couldn't prove invisible miniature minotaurs aren't flying around the city), chances are, ouija boards are just a game.

  19. I love how people think Ouija boards are some ancient tool for communicating with the spirits when actually they were just created as a board game a little more than a hundred years ago.

    Such bullshit
