It's not much, but here's my little spot. Just over 3yrs ago this was another part of the yard, tilled it open, been tilling lots brown stuff in it twice a yr since. This yr is the first for any woodchips. The empty rows are for kale, beans, and carrots. Sowed 2 corn this time per hole, and basically all have sprouted, so ill have tps where needed. Still not sure what happened the other times, but whatever. I should have planted the peppers closer together, thats at least a row of waisted space. Guess I could run some beans in between I spoke with the farmer, and he'll bring me a few buckets of manure when I'm ready. Figure on finishing the garden this yr, opening fresh ground for expansion, get manure and till it all together for next yr.
You can eat them raw or cooked. Here’s a few ideas. https://www.thekitchn.com/five-ways-to-eat-squash-blosso-87564. The plant will have male and female flowers and if you eat the females you won’t have zukes because you’ll be eating them tiny or cutting them off and tossing them. I’ve tried them raw but that’s it. They’re okay, not too much flavor imo
Ohhh thank you I asked my dad and he only tried em deep fried. I'm like I'm trying to be healthy here Mr! He said the same thing bland and not much point. Sent with it's not a lie!?
Monarda starting to bloom. (Bee balm) we have a pretty decent size patch and it’s beautiful when in full bloom and it lasts quite awhile. Pollinators love it! A mini pumpkin? Butternut I believe...
I just happened to get this link and I thought it might be interesting to some of you since we’ve been talking about mulch quite a bit lately. This is one option and happens to be what I chose to do. My long term goal is a forest garden so it fits my plans well. YMMV. I’m very happy with how it’s working for me and how easy it is if you have the resources. https://www.motherearthnews.com/org...ium=email&utm_campaign=MEN GDN eNews 07-07-20
Spread a bale of straw through the garden yesterday. Kale and bush beans are all sprouting, once they take hold ill rake everything level and spread straw through the rest. I also put a few qt jars of wine cap spawn throughout before laying the straw. No real plan other than spread and lay, and see what happens come next yr. I figure once it gets tilled 1 last time this yr it'll spread whatever myc there is everywhere. The end of this month I'll sow carrots and that should be it
I agree... I had a buddy clear his lot of cottonwood and aspen trees last spring and they delivered all the chipped material to me for free. Probably had about 30-40 yards or so! It’s been a life saver for both my veggies and my cannabis plants. I put a couple of inches in the bottom of the fabric pots and then mulch the top, its been hot and windy lately and it’s really helped to keep things from drying out, I also spread out a layer of about 3-4” over an area that I will use over the upcoming years as another veggie garden. It’ll work that soil for me!
Definitely garlic season at least for a few more days. Ground is somewhat dry and the dirt popped right off the roots. I'm happy with what's coming in size wise. Some of the weaker hardnecks flopped over a few weeks ago. I,m eating those now.
Lettuce bench and radishes also. Nice having some food on the deck and the lettuce stays much much cleaner! I have a new garden pal. This is apparently an orphan and has decided to camp out here. Did a bit of damage in 2 days. Tighten up the perimeters, rotten egg wash om everything backed up by cayenne pepper spray. It thinks were pals Not afraid of me at all. Ate a bunch of beans, sweet potato leaves and every sunflower! broccoli apple ginger smoothie! Man it's hot out, stay cool folks. Gardens are looking good!
Considered a nuisance by my wife because of it's aggressive determination of overgrow everything, I'm determined to make spiritual lemonade from the Cyprus Vine that comes on strong all Summer long. Well into adorning the wrought iron accent in the front yard and overwhelming the lattice that borders my smaller plot in back. Beyond this it's all flowers throughout.
A ways back I mentioned letting one tatsoi go to seed.......It worked very very well. I might have tatsoi seed for life now, lol.
These are red and grow naturally in my yard; along with gathering seed last year out of curiosity, I simply uprooted young sprouts this year and added them to the half barrel where the sculpture is.
