  3. Would it be a good idea to fill the bottom 1/4 of a wooden pot with dry leaves before adding soil? Just curious

  5. I try to avoid placing anything that hinders drainage in the bottom of a pot. Usually I find keeping the same mix top to bottom works best, with mulch on top of course. Ground up leaves are great mixed in, and slightly composted ones are best.

  6. Jay - I’m not “good”. I’m just lucky enough to have a very well draining soil in my garden area (SAND lol) - in which I took it upon myself to add nutrition and microbes over the last 13 years - in other words I just did the required work and nature did the rest.

I simply added huge and massive amounts of organic matter to basically inert sand - and I mulch. That is my big secret lol - I should write a book (paragraph lol) - so if that makes me a good gardener then absolutely anyone can be.

So now since I’ve added all this OM, I now have a very rich and well draining garden soil loaded with worms, bacteria, fungus and a wide variety of assorted nutrients that stays constantly moist even on the hottest days due to the mulching.

Pretty ideal right - and all from adding OM.

    Oh - and the Comfrey.

  9. Thanks man. I apologize about my PMs before. I was just a newbie and didnt realize better. Now i know you are probably the best, if not in the top 5 of the entire world of seeking knowledge from. Sadly tho, this leaf area is like an oasis i the desert. I could look all day for another and never find one. I'd have to take a 100mil boat ride out into the ocean then up the yukon for a bit for a good supply of leaves. On another note of these little patch of shrubs. I tried to take enough leaves to satisfy myself without harming the ecosystem itself.( 12 or so shrubs lined up in a row on a dry pond bed). Mixed it into compost as suggested. May i ask what is the minimal size you would create for a leaf mold pile?

  12. Garlic harvest day! I got 89 total, 48 Music, which are the big white ones, and 41 mixed from last years garlic. Those are kinda hidden on the other side of the table under the Music. The Music grew huge in my garden beds but the rest were grown beside our driveway just mixed in with flowers and didn’t get as large. They didn’t have as much mulch either.
@jerry111165 @Tree dogg @AugustWest I’ll bring you some when we get together next month.

  13. Definitely not the best! I have learned an incredible amount here just like so many have before me. Granted I’ve been doing it quite a long time so like with anything “practice makes perfect” and the more you do something the more you figure out what works.

As far as leaf mold goes, any compost heap whether it’s leaf mold or whatever… The bigger the better in my opinion now, leaf mold doesn’t need to stay hot as long as a regular compost heap does so it doesn’t need to be as big but try and always make it as big as you possibly can.

  14. Awesome. Leaves are hard to come by here but i will grab as many as i can find without harming the ecosystem itself. Im just beginning to garden and have chosen organics for the way to go. Of course I have the cannas growing but began germinating some kale, basil, bunching onions, and peas to see if i can grow myself some food indoors over the long cold artic circle winter

  15. Great thread!! I’ll try uploading some of my 3,000 square foot hydroponic tomato garden. Last season I yielded over 1,100 pounds of plump tomatoes!! Hydro is a lot more complicated when it comes to tomato’s. Took 4 seasons before could even get a plant to stay alive long enough for a tomato to grow.

    Well.

    Another photo bomb - lol

I spent time on Sunday morning adding the top row to both my longer tomato run and also the cherry tomatoes.

Well supported tomatoes are happy tomatoes.

How much pressure does it take to make a perfectly ripe cherry tomato explode between your teeth? I’m starting to get 20-30 a day now and that number is getting bigger fast. There are SO many cherries in this patch, which contains 2 plants - although I am sure that one plant would’ve filled in the same area . 5BF70BE5-86F3-4CAA-B33A-F7012600207C.jpeg D22C4982-4E59-4036-A654-C7EC91A4D410.jpeg

My oldest is a big fan of Brussel Sprouts - there’s gonna be a lot off of the six plants this year. 204A43BD-0F2E-4679-9B65-2A47739B6370.jpeg 107DD571-C609-42BE-8F31-8F0F7F9ADA90.jpeg

This is like the third cutting of broccoli off of these plants so far. I wonder if I could get a fourth? I’ve never tried.

The peppers are cranking. I’m gonna leave them in place for a while and see if they’ll turn red and yellow. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a matter of time.

If I had built the tomato trellis/supports 10’ high these plants would fill them - crazy crazy.

We’ve taken so much basil off of this plant on the porch steps it’s ridiculous. As much as we cut off it fills in twice as thick.
