And your garden shows! I live in a area where I probably wouldn't even need to add anything other than mulch, but I added aged composted horse and goat shit anyways. Plus lots of leaves and rotting leaves and some composted chicken poo. I have a few sandy spots by my barn that eventually I'll fix with loads of composted manure. Maybe put that tiller to use again afterall

I just harvested my garlic and kept the flower heads from the hardneck varieties. I'm planning on growing out the bulbils and want to know if you have a preferred method of storing. Also, do you prefer planting the bulbils in early spring or in the fall?

    Thanks in advance!

  4. For the storing I just leave a inch or 2 of stalk on and keep in paper lunch bags in a not hot spot. Pretty much the same as drying/storing the garlic heads.

I plant in the fall and let them overwinter. For me it works better than the early spring planting. Harvest about the same time as you do your garlic, perhaps a bit sooner. Depends on when they get wilty. Dry and store like your regular garlic. Leaving them in the ground doesn't work very well. I tried and close to 90% died.

For planting the bulbils the first time I was told to plant base down just like garlic cloves. You will go nuts trying, like trying to plant individual grains of rice, :bang: :bang: I like the 4gal 'squat pots', plenty of surface area and not super deep, 6" deep is plenty. I put the mix in (NO NEEM!), firm it up some and then take a 3 tined cultivator and break up the surface. Then, I dribble the bulbils into the "nooks & crannys", add about a 1/4" of mix to level and water it all in. Enough will be base down to fill the pot. Sometimes before the water, I might firm the mix very lightly with the backs of my fingers. Sometimes not. You'll see as you go along.

I do like to plant the bulbils a good couple of weeks before the mature garlic, if only to get some good solid green growth before the hard freeze. I also sow a bit on the heavy side since many will be in the wrong position, too deep, too shallow, whatever and I would guess less than 40% sprout well. Plus, there are a boatload in each head and how many heads you saved.

It's easier the second year and on. They will be big enough to handle and treat more like mature garlic and they also must be dried and cured each year.

I love used mix for bulbils, but found out the hard way even slight residues of neem/karanja will wreak havoc. Found that out this past season wher I used some mix that had no neem added for a year at least. This year I'm going to make all fresh mix for the garlic and bulbils with zero neem added. Had the same effect on some onion sets, so perhaps Alliums are super sensitive. IDK

Anything else I can help with, just give a shout.
    Cheers

    Wet

  6. I cut a bunch of broccoli yesterday. It was starting to go leggy on me so I cut and froze it.

This here was already cut back once - pretty good for a second flower.

Tomatoes are goldurn crazy right now. They’re over my head. I picked a few last night - the next 6-8 weeks will be huge.

  7. Must have been 7-8 years ago I grew a few pot plants down in one of the lower field areas. I got some fabric similar to landscape material from work ( we get it in rolls 12 feet wide by 100 feet long) and sewed up some assorted size homemade smart pots with a drawstring top. The pots worked out good - the stolen plants were another story altogether. The moral is don’t even trust 25+ year old acquaintances/roommates. But I digress.

I cut circles for a base, a strip for the sides and using a monofilament line for thread I triple
Stitched the 12” to 16” sides to the round bottoms on a sewing machine. I wiped out a bunch of these smart pots in an afternoon. I folded the top over after ironing the edge down 3” or 4” and after inserting a rope drawstring.

I was out walking yesterday and stumbled on one of these homemade smart pots my lazy ass had left out there. I was pleasantly surprised to find it still in great shape.

  8. Well, Chunk - you know I’m a Rebel... and now that it’s totally legal here I kind of lost interest...

    Lol

But all kidding aside - after my -25 frozen solid grow room fiasco this past winter I just decided to take a break... after god knows how long of indoor cannabis gardening - since the late 80’s? I decided I was burnt out and figured I’d take a break. A much needed break. Trimming every weekend for all those years puts a toll on you.

I’ll play again sometime - for now I’ve just been concentrating on the vegetable garden.

  11. For you folks that live in the country - I’m guessing you know what I mean...

The aroma of actual clean air! After a heavy rain recently (a couple days ago)my wife and I were outside and while we’ve noticed it before it’s always a pleasure.
Hydrocarbons washed out the air by the rain - The pungent smell of growing plants and flowers is distinct in the air. You can smell the earth, the soil without anything getting in the way and on the right days it’s crazy how pleasurable it is. I was just driving down some far back roads up here in Maine and was overwhelmed by the fantastic smells I was getting. I hope you all get to enjoy this as well!

  19. Great looking garden jay!
I have a bunch of that same kale, 8 plants counting the two volunteers from last year. I find if I harvest, from the bottom, all but the top 4 leaves once it gets at least 8 initially, it grows like crazy and I get something weekly. Just FYI. I’m eating more than they’re producing though so I’ll probably plant a dozen next year.
