Organic Soil Amendment

  1. Thanks for the great sticky Corto ... big help in building my soil blend

  2. No problem man. Just make sure it's airy and you'll be fine. Soil mixes depend also of how much it rains in your area, if you can water often, if you want to include all nutrients (see nute spikes) in the soil for the whole season and just use compost teas mainly. Good luck and later.

  3. nice post, Im glad someone is on the right track.. GO ORGANICS!:hello:

  4. Excellent post Corto, right out of my first semester soils class in college.
One thing I have to dispute a little and it's really not that big a deal.
As I mentioned in a different thread I got 1 1/2 years into a Bachelors of Science degree in Plant Science, been in landscaping for 18 to 20 years and have done organic vegetable gardening my whole life.
If there was gas in or on the grass from a gas lawnmower, the grass would die.
If you mow with a gas mower there is no gas in the grass.
What you need to be concerned with with lawn clippings is if there are chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides used on the lawn. If there where then stay away from it.
I mow my own lawn with a gas mower as my father did before me.
We have used the clippings in compost and as a mulch to keep weeds down in the garden for years. Never had any type of problems with it.

  5. Thanks guys. I'm not a specialist lol. Glad I could help out some people. Stay green.:smoking:

  6. just tried the soil test w/ water. worked fantastic w/ the salt like u suggested. I realized I was not putting near enough perlite even though i thought i was. looked like it was about 20% of the jar, the next test is showing around 40%. excellent post & info Corto. +1 rep

  7. You're welcome bombata. Glad it worked well.

  8. Thank you +rep/stickied

I don't do any foliar feeding with any thing I'm gonna smoke indoors or out.
Tiger boom does have chemicals that are not organic. The wrong dose will burn.
    It doesn't take much.

Now I use various Bat guanos directly to the soil with water and seaweed extract added to water. Great stuff those bat guanos. The local garden center here sells 3 types. A high N, a high P, and another I don't need.

  10. What about the use of pigeon droppings for fertilizer?

  11. Hey have you guys heard of this new stuff this backdoor hydroponics shop just told me about, they claim they hav a buddy that owns a farm where they make this fertilizer these people just introduced to the market and its supposed to be fish poop. They had already closed so he couldnt give me the N-P-K value but he told me it was flyin off the shelf and it was cheap like $15.00 for a 5 pound bag!?!?!?:D

  12. Great sticky Corto.

I have a question or maybe a thought.

Somewhere back in the hazy part of my brain I remember something about one of the methods for recovering the soil after the great dust bowl. What I seem to remember is they planted legumes like beans and then plowed them back into the soil to provide organic matter and long and slow release of nitrogen. I was thinking or wondering that if you turned a bunch of green beens into your planting area at the end of the season in the fall. Would that benefit the soil over the winter for next years growing season.

Please let me know if you think this could be a benefit or even be worth it.

I picked this up at the big box store for $7 lb. Since it's not regulated the ratio's are not on the label but if standard labling convention is being followed it is primarily comprised of ocean kelp, fish meal, and alfalfa meal in that order. Smells good! Can't attest to the effectiveness of it yet....soil mix is currently cooking for a couple of weeks while I'm popping beans. I'll be posting my soil mix and grow soon in the future.........

So, in the spirit of "McGyver" onward I move towards the goal of effective minimalism and off-the-big-box-shelf of organic growing while saving money! Those packages of bio and mycor goobers with the Great White Sharks and really Big Cats on the label just scare hell out of me! :D

    Cheers!

  15. :D they used to build giant pidgeon houses to get guano &meat .i saw a program on some that were hundreds of years old. im wondering about swallows guano too.i've used it for years in my soil mixes, compost, worm beds(this is best i think)don't know whats in it but it's good whatever it is.i always assumed that their insect diet would result in a high amount of nitrogen.it would be nice to get n-p-k though.:smoke::smoke::wave:

Excellent tid bits on soil science, cheers.

  17. Synthetic fertilizers do not support microbial life in soil. Application of synthetic fertilizers actually kill a significant percentage of beneficial microorganisms. These tiny creatures are responsible to break down organic matter to become a permanent amendment to improve soil quality and fertility. Organic materials to beneficial microorganisms in the complex mixture of soil.
