Opinions on Cheap Grow light

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by NastyNate96, Jun 3, 2020.

  1. Hi there, I have been doing a lot of lurking/researching for the past 2-3 weeks concerning how to start my own grow. I currently have a 4x2 Grow tent setup, and I wanted to get some opinions on a cheap light.

my plan would be to supplement this with 4 15 watt household led bulbs for additional lighting.

I’m aware that the light is only pulling around 200 true watts from the wall, but would it be reasonable to expect 4-5 ounces from each grow, assuming that I feed the plants with nutrients adequately, and apply training techniques?

  2. Ya I'd say that should get you there. Light is only half of it, but if the other half is good then I think you'd possibly see even more weight. 260W in 8ft2 is ~32W/ft2 and despite the assumed lower efficiency, it should still provide rather adequate light.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply man!
Yeah, I know that light by itself won’t produce a bountiful harvest, but I do believe that it is my weakest link ATM. I currently have a good soil medium (Fox Farms), nutrient regiment (advanced nutrients line), and have my tent running a good Temp and Humidity at this time. Fingers crossed

  5. If you're on a budget mate see how much it is for the Amazon specials.
    600w Omega mh/hps is only £75 where I am.
One of those dimmed to 400w would be better for your area.
Get 400g no worries if you fill it right up with a nice flat canopy.

Blurple lights are ok. They do grow weed. I use 240s that are similar and get 10z per light on a perfect run.
Gotta keep the canopy flat and wide with the total plant height as close to 2ft as you can get it.
The penetration on blurples is pish so you only get propper fat nugs on like the top 8inches. The rest just turns to fluff.
The taller they get the worse the yield is.

  6. I agree with you on the HPS being a better yielding choice. The reason I’ve chosen to run LEDs is both for the lower heat output, and the smaller electricity bill. I currently am renting a small house right now, but in the future I would like to install an HPS somewhere in my system for sure.

I forgot to mention, I have another 2 LED panel lights (drawing 27 watts each) that I will likely set up for some extra side/supplemental lighting as well. This would bring the total true wattage to roughly 300-310. Personally, if I am able to pull 4-6 ounces every 2-3 months I will be happy (for now). I definitely plan to reinvest into a nicer setup with each harvest

  7. IMO i would be a little be concerned that they claim 200+ watts draw from wall for 79.99 in LED terms 200+ watts draw for that price seems too good to be true to me but again thats my personal opinion good luck in what ever you decide to buy.

  8. Thanks for the concern man, the model is typically priced at $100. I have seen other models similarly priced, and this one is actually a tad higher than some. I do know that it has a bit of a higher heat output than others as well, but for my case it should not be an issue

  9. Yeah my 240w blurps are about 90-100£ these days. Should be sound. I think lol.

  10. If you don’t mind sharing, what sort of setup/yield are you pulling?

  11. With 2 of the 240s i average about 17oz per run in a square meter. On the very rare occasions it goes perfectly can get 22-25 but doesn’t happen very often.
Lots of training, trimming and plants being fed constantly from a recirc in iether Coco or NFT.
Grew my profile pic with the blurples. That was 22oz. Not bad for an auto.

  12. Sorry bro i should have been more specific i meant 200w+ of decent LED like marsh
Did you not miss a S at the end of that sentence bro :lmafoe::lmafoe:

  13. Nope, single buddy. Was 2 old mars 600s (240) only my second ever plant too.
4inch rockwool that’s bottom fed around 500litres per day from a recirc. Roots grow in fresh air.
It’s basically legal to have 1 plant here. Get a £350 fine and that’s about it regardless the size so I just learned to drop pounders from the get go.
I studied mr ganjamotos methods on how he got a 1kg auto and just done what he done as best I could.
getting autos that size is a doddle in hydro.
hit google for @rambogarden. He’s another dude I learned a lot from. His house is generally half full of 600-800g autos in pissy little 15L pots of coco.
