Hey guys. After germination, I've seen most people putting their seeds into plastic cups or small pots and then transplanting them later. Is there any reason why I can't use the same 3 gallon pot from the very beginning? I'm only growing one plant so space isn't as issue and I just want to save some dirt and the possibility of transplant shock. Thanks Δ
its up to you. In general with all plants, less transplanting is best because the plant can get stressed and do funky things. All i do is plan to put them in a 3inch peat pot, then after about 2 weeks or however long it takes i plant that whole pot in a 3 gallon. that way there really isnt any transplanting Its all up to you though. I think most people start in smaller containers because its easier to control. When they are young they are most vunerable to over water and other problems. By having a smaller container you have a better control over all of those problems.
It's mostly preference but what does help keeping them in little pots at first is water. When they're in a big pot you don't want to soak the whole thing as it can get fungii, insects and mold in the wet parts that roots aren't soaking up. In a little environment it's easier to control that until the roots spread out. It takes some practice to see how much water a little seedling in a big pot can use.
you should just go get some peat pots, they come from really tiny to a moderate size, i like to get the ones that are 3-4 inches, they are a bit bigger so i can start them in there then i just plant the whole pot in a bigger container I got like 10 of them for 4 bucks at an ace hardware store around here
