On my way to a new me - Depression

  1. I'm not really sure if this is appropriate for this section of the forums, sorry if it's not.

I've been suffering from depression for that last few months and it has really been getting to me ALOT. Ever since my mother tried to kill herself about 5-6 months ago, I've had this doubt in life that its not even worth living. Now I know what you're thinking, but I have realized lately how ridiculous this is. Though, when I am depressed, I don't have those positive thoughts, even though I know its stupid to even think that way.

I've been reading and reading about how depression affects people, and I was actually surprised at some of the outcomes people have had. Mind you, I'm not much of a reader. In fact, I hate reading. I think this goes along with my concentration (adhd). I finally read this long page about this so called depression and kind of started to realize...

I think it is time for a change.

Yesterday I thought about it long and hard and I think in order to relieve this depression that I'm having, I need to start thinking ahead in life. Here, I have a list of goals, and I want you guys to wish me best of luck, because I think it would make me feel better about myself, really. You will be surprised what depression can interfere with in life. Here are the goals below:

    1. Find at least 2 jobs - I think this will start off my goals to a life to success, as I've been unemployed for 5-6 months now.
    2. Quit smoking cigarettes - I've been relying on cigarettes for years now, since I was 14 or 15. If I can quit this, I'll be healthier and when I am stressed out, I don't have to rely on cigarettes to relieve it
    3. Go to college - I've been thinking alot about UTI (Universal Technical Institute), I want to move forward with an automotive career. Cars are my life
    4. Quit doing other drugs - Such as pills, cocaine, mdma, etc... I need to stop before its too late.
    5. Start being active - I need to start running or playing sports a couple days a week. Keeps me of the couch while eating chips...
    6. Make new friends - I've found that having a few friends helps, but isn't enough.
    7. Start eating healthy - Gives you more energy than eating unhealthy and I've been eating unhealthy foods for a long time now

If you guys have any other goals that you think I can achieve or try out, please let me know, I'd be happy to give It a shot.

Thanks to all of you who understand

  2. If you don't make life worth living, it's not
Your plan sounds good, stick to it. I'd say start a martial art, and make sure it's a good studio, not a McDojo, if anything just for the consistant exercise.
Go to UTI, your job will never be outsourced and it's pretty good pay.
Oh, and good luck. You can do it!

  3. All of those things go together. Working, going to school, and working out will all help you make friends. Working out will help give you motivation to quit cigarettes and other drugs. It's very hard to make it through a workout strung out on pills or run 5 miles after a bogie. Eating healthy will help you with working out and with your energy levels at work.

Doing it all at once can be hard though. It's very easy and exciting at first, but you get bored of it quickly. Stick with it for at least a couple of months, and you should at the very least build some good habits.

  4. Thank you for your help, I will look into the martial arts, as I've been into mma for a while, maybe mma can push me into doing some type of martial arts. I will see thank you!

  5. If you work at those goals you are on the right track. Keep strong man and good luck.

  6. Whether the glass is half full or half empty doesn't matter. When you know that eventually the glass will shatter and can not only accept this but see the beauty in every moment the glass is intact, then you have come to see the Way.

  7. I'm happy to say, even though its only been about 2-3 days since i've made these goals, I have felt ALOT better. Hopefully this will continue because being depressed is not worth it :/

  8. These are great goals, but its a lot of things to take on all at once. I'd advise to take it slow and accept that there will be setbacks. Its really easy to get gung-ho about changing your life for a few weeks, then its too much work to keep up, and everything goes down the crapper.

Good luck with everything. Keep us updated.

  9. Yea I'm taking it one step at a time, its been working out great though. I have no complaints.

  10. @mitvr impressive goals you have set more interesting your positive reaction to get out from the situation was an awesome you can became an role model for the others.....

  11. Well I seem to have got my act together for the most part. I'm still working on the friends part, but my main goal now is the jobs and quit smoking cigs part. I quit smoking and I actually just got confirmation about returning to my job! The best job I've had yet, money wise... lol but thank you! I will update you guys on the other things when I can, I'll be working alot lately. I actually just got another job as well.

  12. Good job mitvr420, keep it up. Remember, you only have one life, make the most of it. Have no regrets.

  13. +1. Definitely make new friends because they are the ones who influence what you do. Make sure to stick to this and if you go off path, remind yourself that the instant gratification isn't worth it compared to the long term goal. Best of luck!

  14. The best way to overcome from the Depression is:->
Listen music that i do most probably,
    reading books,
    chating with an friends,
    Watch movie..................

  15. Alright, I basically suffer from anxiety which sometimes gets me depressed. Best tips i can possibly give.
-Put yourself in an active environment mainly your good friends, your parents or even your pets.
    - Find a good healthy habit. In Ex. Mine is working out with my friends then ripping his bong. Haha
-Be optimistic. Think about positive things like exciting events happening, girls or a new video game In example: Black Ops or Fable or even WoW or whatever games you play.

Try not to think you are going to have it for the rest of your life, keep thinking you will get rid of this depression and... you really can by following these tips. Good Luck.

  16. only problem with reading is I can't focus enough to even read, and same with watching a movie. I can't sit around doing nothing, i have to be active, my adhd plays a big part in my depression but right right now i haven't been too depressed, at this point i'm preparing, I did acheive those goals that I posted, except for the two jobs, but i'm still looking

  17. Depression sucks.
I was depressed, and I have anger problems as well. The best advice I can give is to stay positive and keep yourself around positive people. The gym is the best place too meet positive people, which is something I've learned over the past few years.
Also, now that you have, or will have 2 jobs. You'll be getting a good amount of income, make sure you make wise choices with that and don't go off buying drugs and alcohol. (maybe just a sac) lol. but keep it on hand.
Something my shrink tought me: Get a loan from somewhere for like 200$. Than deposit it into a separate bank account and have that place auto deduct it. This should boost your credit score incase you want to buy a car or house in the future. Also make sure you store about 300$ somewhere as an emergency fund. Just incase of anything like a broken window or whatever.
And last but not least, pretty simple actually is not to give up. there will be days when you're just like "fuck everything" I wanna go back to my old ways. But you gotta push through that. Get something that will remind you to push through those days and that it will all get better. For example on my 18th birthday I got a tattoo that says "the one who feels sorry for himself should" it's really helped me through those days. It's clearly visible on my left forearm.
But you have a good list of goals and from what I've seen you can easily overcome depression.
Goodluck and keep up the good work broseph.
