Old Seeds - Not Fridge Stored - Germ Advice?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by GrowGlow, Jun 23, 2020.

  1. Did the water soak, paper towels then planted them. Been a week still nothing. These are 3-4 year old seeds. God knows how long they were stored before it was sent to me. 6 months ago was still germing fine.

    I have:

Powdered humic/fulvic acid. Labels say 70% humic and 15%-20% fulvic.

    H2O2 6%

    Seaweed/Kelp Extract Powder

Some GA3 10% tablets on the way. But will it be necessary If I already have kelp?

    Plan is,

    1. Soak in mild H2O2 solution. Instead of 1ml to 10ml, gonna just do 1ml to 100ml. Soak for 8-12 hours.

    2. Add about 0.3g of seaweed extract to a litre of RO water. Then soak for another 8-12 hours. Do I add GA3 here? Or do a separate GA3 soak? Or transfer to paper towels damped with GA3 solution? Or skip it entirely?

    Advice much appreciated!

  2. What an incredible way of over complicating a simple germination process lol.

  4. Well, my usual method for fresh seeds is real simple. Soak till tail shows. Then plant. Usually within 24 hours.

I just germed 10 seeds a week ago with only 1 popping. Its quite obvious that my simple approach is not working for these old seeds not stored in optimal conditions. Instead of repeated failures or tossing them, I really don't mind a slightly complicated but effective solution. I'm not expecting 100% germ rate. An improvement would be good enough.

I am posting for help/advice. Hope I get some. Thank you.

  5. Seen lots of those. Just not sure how to use them?

  6. Sand them and Gibb acid is the usual method of working seeds 5 and more yrs old.
Line a small Match box with 100 grit sandpaper, shake seeds 30 seconds. Soak in acid and sprout.
Tweezers will do but they pop free and get lost in the shag carpet.

  7. Well my advice is always really simple keep seeds warm and moist plant them in the dirt cover lightly and let them do there thing the time i have found in my experience is usually between 24hrs and 4 days germination but i know a few growers report for them to take anywhere between 7-14 days i hope my time replying was helpful enough for you good luck i hope you get a successful harvest :thumbsup:

  10. 500ppm solution full soak seems to be the accepted range from a fast web search and what I remember.

  11. I've seen ppl use from 50ppm to 500ppm. As mine are not that old, I'm thinking around 125ppm or so.

Maybe I'll do 8 hours soaks each of H202 and then with kelp + humic/fulvic. I doubt they will show tail in 16 hours so perhaps another 8 hours in 125ppm GA3, before I put them in paper towels.

Don't wanna stick them in dirt, as I won't be able to check on their progress. Or maybe that's a good thing?

Well, I still got time to think about this. Am giving my current beans another 2-3 days to make it a full 10 day germ attempt.

    Thanks growbro!

Have you tried sticking a few in the freezer overnight? I've seen that work when other approaches didn't.
Old grower I knew swore by it.
