old nutes?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by greennewb, Dec 8, 2012.

  1. I have someone bottles of nutrients that have been sitting for a while. Close to a year I think. Just curious if they can go bad or anything. Would they still be good to use? Thanks.

  2. dont think they could go bad. look for some sort of expiration date. otherwise I'm sure they dont go bad after 1 year

  3. thanks Retina420. i couldn't find any expiration date so i'm assuming they're still good.

roots in my DWC bucket just popped through the mesh pot this morning!! going to start adding nutrients tomorrow!! :hello::hello:

  4. make sure you dont overfeed! if they are young they probably won't need much nutrients yet, just water. do your research. good luck!

  5. if the nutes are organic then they are no good
    if mineral , use them

  6. Thanks for the warning. I've grown this strain before in dwc though so it's all good. Probably going to start at quarter strength nutes like last time. Check my sig for my previous grow journal.

  7. Thanks. They are not organic. I use the General Hydroponics line.

  8. I heard from the hydro shop that luqid nutes don't have a very long shelf life. I bought some before that turned from white to yellow and smelled really bad. He said the powder nutes have a much longer shelf life. I was going to stock pile up on some and he warned me not to.

  9. I would like some reference back up for that statement.

  10. Of course they will tell you that in the shop - they want you to buy more nutes.

Think about this, nutes are essentially elements, Nitrogen, and chemical compounds (organic or no). If they are stored in a closed container, where do they go? A black hole forms in the jug? How do they loose potency?

I could be wrong but I have used very old nutes that did the same thing as brand new.

  11. HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP IT CLOSED?
Biobizz products are handmade, natural, organic and GMO free products without preservatives for this reason shelf life is less than factory made chemical fertilizers. The average life of Biobizz products is between 12-24 months when stored correctly.

HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP IT OPEN?
Due not containing any preservative Biobizz products are completely natural with only the best organic compounds as ingredients. For this reason we do not recommend to leave bottles unclosed or with the cap.

HOW LONG CAN YOU KEEP IT MIXED WITH WATER?
We recommend using the prepared solution within two till tree days due to organic compound, natural ingredients and micro organisms.

in day 3 if warm enought the fish mix mixed with water will smell like roten fish

    happy now ?

  12. Yes, thank you. No offense but anyone can post any statement on here and often do. I like to have statements back up.

I would still like to hear a scientific explanation on how the nutes loose potency in a closed container. I guess the could, I just don't take people who are trying to sell me somethings word as fact.

These nutes you linked to seem to be for soil or coco grows and not hydro.

  13. the mineral nutrients will not react with each other inside the botle in lack of anny contaminants and if not mixed 2-3 part nutrient (A&B , grow micro bloom)
but the organic nutrients are plant extracts and contain microorganisms , hormones and manny other unstable chemicals that can and will go bad (desintegrate/react with other chemicals) in time

in a botle of liquid mineral fertilizer you have some solid minerals (amonium nitrate , potasium nitrate , calcium nitrate , potasium monofosfate , magnezium nitrate , potasium sulfate) disolved in distiled water (usualy) and most of them do not react with each other and if they do they are kept in separate botles. that is why you have A&B , grow&micro&bloom formulas and on the botle is written to mix only in water and not with eachother

to convince yourself about that fact (if you have A&B solution) take 10ml A and 10ml B and mix them in a cup and wait for the result
you will have a liquid with a salt deposit at the bottom and that salt is really hard to dysolve in water and useles for the plant.

i will show you the reaction later

  14. Look at this A&B hydroponic nutrients

theres a lot of misleading information in this thread.

i suggest you dont feed your plants at all until they are out of the seedling stage.

even then, i dont suggest feeding if theyre already thriving

marty skunksese, youre probably right, synethic nutes can probably make a much bigger plant, but this is a mutant plant. the soil will not be fertile, the plant will not be fertile, and the smoke will be harsh.

thanks for all the comments. i think i will still try to use the nutrients and see if they work or not. i'm sure i'll notice a difference even by tomorrow if they have. they pretty much smell the same as they did before. i'm using GH three part formula - these are not organic nutrients. nothing seemed to be settling at the bottom of the bottles or anything like that and i obviously shook them a lot to mix them up before making my nutrient solution.

@bmeat: the plant has been in the bubbler for over a week. i put it in there a day or two after it broke the surface of the jiffy pellet i was germinating in. it has its first set of regular leaves growing already. i've read a lot about growing in DWC and have done before. pretty much everything i've read says that once the roots grow out of the bottom of the mesh pot, you are supposed to lower the water level (to about 1" below the bottom of the pot) and you can start adding nutrients at 1/2 strength or 1/4 strength. i started really low (like 150 PPM).

also put the HPS light on it as well but obviously not very close to it.

  17. also bmeat, about the smoke being harsh after using mineral nutrients as opposed to organic, i don't have that problem. i flush my plant for at least a week before harvest. i just fill the bucket with pure pHed water for 7-10 days to make sure all the nutrients are out of the plant before i start chopping it down.

  18. here are some pics for what it's worth. first one is the seedlings popping out of the jiffy pellets. second is the plant today in the bubbler. third pic is my second plant in a hempy bucket (probably keep this one as the mother).

  19. is that coco fiber? i want to try that for my next set of plants.

since you used chemical fertilizer, it most likely killed all the biota in the soil and made it sterile. youre gonna have to supplement food from now on becuase of this. plan to feed the plant ~2 more times before harvest. dont feed too close to harvest, you want to flush out chemicals.
