  1. i recently learned "o'clock" is the abbreviation for "of the clock" so it got me thinking if the same logic applied to names like o'connor as in "he is liam of the connors" or "he is liam of the connor clan" kind of way....

does anyone know something about this?

  2. Yes, that's exactly right.

And the prefix "Mc" or "Mac" means "son of"

  3. very cool, thank you...

  4. Actually, in certain parts of ireland it often meant "grandson of". Stephen Fry said it, so it must be true.

  5. i see...maybe its just a regional thing like you/fry said...

  6. Its a celtic thing.. Irish and Scottish people do this kind of stuff. You pretty much figured it out.

  7. made me happy too :le:

  8. Somewhat helps establish lineage like the others said.
My fathers side is a Mc and it gets a little hard to follow once you get a few generations back.

  9. yeah its apparently like the "bin" and "abu" in arabic that signify being the father or son of someone...the "-son"s of europe and -i love this by the way- the "-dottir"s of iceland....pretty diggable thus i dig it :le:
