Oakland, CA

Discussion in 'Marijuana Legalization' started by dm0nt0k3, Aug 6, 2009.

  1. Anyone else hear this? :

I heard from a less-than-reputable source that Oakland, CA has just legalized MJ. I researched it and found nothing to support this, just that Oakland passed a bill regarding MJ tax for the medical MJ they're growing. Has anyone else heard anything to support the theory that MJ is legal ANYWHERE in North America?

  2. No. Oakland now has a $50/ounce tax on the MMJ. It has NOT been legalized. However, they are pushing to legalize marijuana and it will probably appear on the November 2010 ballot here in California.

I figured it would be bigger news if it had actually been legalized. Thanks much for the info.

It's not $50 an ounce, its a 1.8% MMJ 'sales tax' (a gross receipts tax, actually). $18 for every $1000 sold. I don't believe it is supposed to be passed down to the buyer, but I can't think of a time when the buyer didn't get stuck with it somehow...

  5. Correct. The $50 an ounce tax is what the legalization bill is calling for.
