World - AP Asia AP North Korea Admits It Has Nuclear Weapons 3 minutes ago \t Add to My Yahoo!\t World - AP Asia SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea (news - web sites) publicly admitted Thursday for the first time that it has nuclear weapons, and said it wouldn't return to six-nation talks aimed at getting it to abandon its nuclear ambitions \t Diplomats have said that North Korea has acknowledged having nuclear arms in private talks, but this is the first time the communist government has said so directly to the public. "We had already taken the resolute action of pulling out of the (Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty) and have manufactured nukes for self-defense to cope with the Bush administration's ever-more undisguised policy to isolate and stifle the DPRK," the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency. DPRK refers to the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. North Korea's "nuclear weapons will remain (a) nuclear deterrent for self-defense under any circumstances," the ministry said. "The present reality proves that only powerful strength can protect justice and truth." Since 2003, the United States, the two Koreas, China, Japan and Russia have held three rounds of talks in Beijing aimed at persuading the North to abandon nuclear weapons development in return for economic and diplomatic rewards. But no significant progress has been made. A fourth round scheduled for September was canceled when North Korea refused to attend, citing what it called a "hostile" U.S. policy. Thursday's statement came after President Bush (news - web sites) started his second term last month by refraining from direct criticism of North Korea - raising hopes that the North would return to the stalled nuclear talks. But North Korea said it had little hope for improved ties during Bush's second term office. "We have wanted the six-party talks but we are compelled to suspend our participation in the talks for an indefinite period till we have recognized that there is justification for us to attend the talks," the North said Thursday. North Korea said it came to its decision because "the U.S. disclosed its attempt to topple the political system in the DPRK at any cost, threatening it with a nuclear stick." Still, North Korea said it retained its "principled stand to solve the issue through dialogue and negotiations and its ultimate goal to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula remain unchanged."
Wouldn't surprise me. Glad Canada stays the fuck out of the way of 95% of world events. If any of you have play Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction for PS2 of X-BOX, you definatley see a correlation between the recent events of North Korea and the 'fictional' plot of that game. I think everybody from grasscity should buy a ticket to North Korea, we go over there, sit down, smoke a blunt with those guys and chill them out a little
u guys dont take this too seriously... my prediction... we try to coax these fucking slants into abandoning the weapons program, they say no because they need protection, we end up trying to dis-arm them (like we did in iraq) or arming our own nukes, and we end up peeling the skin off the whole fuckin world... i may sounds like a drama queen, but these punks are looking for trouble, why else just announce this out of no where? why not just shut up untill the time comes that they may nee dthis protection.. cuz like bush said, we have no reason (untill now) to bother korea...
Mmm...what's crazy was that last night I had a dream about getting nuked... Totally uncool feeling, couldn't go to sleep after that.
Thank u president Bush!! I cant wait to see what u got in store for us, w/ in the next 4 years.. Where the hell's Clinton when u need him, aye?? Chad
You know clinton introduced and signed the "iraqi freedom act" which was basically a pre-cursor to the war, right? As far as another cold war, North Korea doesn't have the means to keep up with us. Not to mention the fact that they are probably pissing off a lot more countries than the U.S. They don't even have the means to get that thing over here, unless they ship it, and that's the real danger there. Because they won't be able to determine WHERE it came from if they bring it over by boat, or fed ex it over here
I think it would actually be pretty easy for north korea to nuke us. They have a whole country full of resources.
basically they just have to get out in the water and they have guns that can shoot those nukes directly over a state, and im guessing on atomic bomb could wipe out all of new york and a good portion of surrounding states.. and they have 2 atomic boms and like..8 nukes? it wouldnt be too hard for them to do...
yea dude i play mercianries for ps2 that game is fuckign awesome..and its ironic how ti takes place in north korea and can defintally see teh realtionship of current events takin place there
wouldnta posted it if i wasnt taking it seriously im thinkin they could reach hawaii, but south korea would probably be the target seing as how they have hundreds of artillery cannons deeply imbedded in mountain terrain aimed at Seoul
