I bet the politicians are pissed that all the emails and conversations with the people they are cheating on their spouses with are saved somewhere and could be accessed. If some law is passed making politicians exempt from the spying than there will be no more resistance from any faction in the government.
There are still quite a few government apologists who think this is perfectly ok. I mean such a thing couldn't possibly lead to abuse and corruption....
