Nostalgia and rabbits

  1. This day seems to ebb on. I find myself thinking thoughts of my childhood days, and my faith then. What brought on these thoughts? I'm not so sure myself, but if I had to guess, I'd say it'd be going to church today. When I was in church today I did some reflecting, not on Jesus, but on myself. I wondered why I used to believe in God, and why I don't now. The answer I arrived on is the same as that of Santa, and the Easter bunny. When we were kids our parents would tell us that the easter bunny came and left you eggs, and Santa would leave you presents on Christmas eve. We were also told tales of faith, and a great man in the sky that was great, wise, and kind.

Now when you get older you stop believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny, but not god. You find out that Santa is really your parents, and so is the Easter bunny. Now, you're mature enough to accept that. But at the time, you needed some outside force telling you why. Now I think that God is the same way, people need some unexplained force giving them a reason. Can't we just do it on our own? Why do we need some fat guy in a red suit with flying deer to give us presents? Why is a rabbit giving us eggs, and where did he get the eggs? Why do we need someone telling us that we'll be rewarded if we're nice to people? Can't we be inherently good, instead of inherently selfish?

  2. Because being unselfish is a paradox. You will do a good deed, being unselfish because it makes you feel good, which in turn does make it about you in some way. There is no such thing as true altruism, and that doesn't make us bad, it's normal.

  3. you can build a school for girls in india and it will still make you happy because you are making other peoples lives better. now you could consider that selfish because you are getting a kick out of it, but of course its not.

ps: new age hippy i want you

  4. Fuck you she's mine.

  5. That's mature. Humans aren't property.

  6. Clearly there is a whiff of sarcasm in the air....smell that? Smells facetious almost...

  7. but it's been proved many times they can be treated as such :)

  8. Selfish has many definitions ranging from pure self interest, which the school would not be pure self interest to self want, or the need for something that makes you feel good. Think about any thing that has ever been done, good, to narrow it down some. You can say war heroes are unselfish, ah, but why did they die? Because they believed it was the right thing, which made them feel good. Which by definition, is selfish. The selfish I'm speaking of is not the commonly known purely egotistical gloat. Humans are creatures of self interest, and behind every good deed, you can see why it benefits them. People don't do things unless it benefits them in SOME way, which could be dyingknowing you did the right thing therefore maybe going to heaven, whatever. And like I said before, it may sound bad, but it really isn't, it's a normal human reaction to want something that benefits them, and you can still do good, and it doesn't have to be about you all the time, but deep down there's a reason for YOU why you do those certain good deeds.

  9. But what if the soldiers didn't want to die, and it didn't make them feel good. They didn't wish to die, but thought it was the right thing, but they didn't necessarily feel good about it. If I was dying, I wouldn't feel good about it either. That would be a truely selfless act correct?

  10. Doing the right thing means it will make you feel good emotionally somewhere or else it wouldn't drive you enough to put your life in danger. Sure physically it won't feel good, or feel good to leave your family, etc, but deep down inside you are knowing you are doing the correct thing which you reap in the way of feeling good. Like I said, it isn't a bad thing. If humans could be truely unselfish we would perish. You have to have self interest for a species to survive unless they were under different circumstances such as the earth and on another planet, were aliens, etc.

  11. now lets be honest....

doesnt control over someone feel good emotionally? eh

  12. Not really, it feels more like murder actually. I saw it in someone's sig on here, it was a Morrison quote. It said something like you can't make someone who you want them to be without killing who they were, and that's murder. And many family members commit murder everyday with a smile on their face.

  13. That would depend highly on your moral values.
