Noob question towards Djs

Discussion in 'Clubs, DJ’s and Festivals' started by zairo, Feb 13, 2013.

  1. So I've owned a Numark for almost a year now and barely started practicing more lately. I'm not the worst but I need practice. Especially with Dubstep.
My main music is Hardstyle but have alot of music I enjoy.

A friend of mine who also Djs is planning on getting a hall we can host an event at. Locally.

My question is. Any tips for us or me in general. ? Were both turning 20. So we pretty young.

  2. Lock yourself in your room for a month or 2 and practice

  3. Futureproducers.com and YouTube tutorials

  4. step one :get yourself some 1200/1210 and learn how to beatmatch!! syncing music is for noobs

  5. Practice everyday. I have a Numark Mixtrack Pro and I practice a lot. You just need to find songs that beatmatch and flow well together too.

  6. Pay attention to the crowd and how they react, if you start playing some dubstep and no one is dancing switch to something else. Also before you ever play put to a crowd make sure you are fully confident in your skills.

  7. If you enjoy doing it and want to take it to the next level then you are going to need to invest in some good equipment. Pioneers cdj's and technics 1210's (running serato) are the club standard (neither are cheap), so if you plan on dj'ing in clubs you need to practice using these.
If you are planning on being a standard club dj then you will need to be able to read the crowd.
You need to start your set slow and build it up to the bangers at the end.
If you are playing a certain genre then play the tracks you want to play as the crowd will be there to hear that style of music. Also try and do something a little different that will make you stand out.
I mainly dj uk hardcore but sometimes I will add a dubstep track or an oldskool jungle track into the mix.
Don't go for bland predictable mixes. I like to mix my tunes in and out quickly so I might only play 1-2 mins of each track but that is MY style. With time you will develop your own style.

If you want to make a name for yourself then you need to send demo mixes out to clubs/events/promoters and be prepared to travel.
You need to get a soundcloud page and a mixcloud page and get your mixes out there for people to hear.
    Hope this helps. :)

  8. There's this dude at a large club around here and he uses nothing more than a mixtrack pro. You don't need much more than that to pull it off though! Also at a smaller club around here my friend will never use anything other than a mixtrack pro too

  9. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a mixtrack pro, just in the uk all the clubs here have 1210's and pioneers as standard. All we do is bring a pile of cds/vinyls and/or a laptop running serato with all of our tunes on. Uk clubs are NOT very flexible about bringing your own stuff in. :(

  12. Music. Open format?

  13. There's so many different types and styles and sub styles etc... It's a bit of a minefield.
Basically you have you big clubs that play dance/trance/dubstep ect...
Your smaller clubs tend to play house ect...
And then you have your raves which cater for specific genres of music. E.g drum n bass, oldskool jungle, uk hardcore ect....
I play uk hardcore and sometimes oldskool jungle.
