NJ authorities seize record $10M-plus of marijuana

    The Associated Press
Officials seized more than $10 million worth of marijuana plants and arrested three people in a pot-growing bust they're calling the largest in state history, state police said Wednesday.

A Monroe Township police officer first detected the smell of marijuana wafting from the chimney of a home last month in the Middlesex County community. A man inside _ 44-year-old Thu N. Nguyen _ was found burning unusable parts of pot plants in the fireplace, police said.

Investigators say they eventually found more than 1,000 pot plants in the home.

That discovery led authorities to five more houses in Millstone Township, Old Bridge, Manahawkin and Manalapan. More than 3,300 plants, 115 pounds of harvest pot and $65,000 cash were seized there, they said.

Nguyen, a Canadian citizen who was being held in the county jail on $1 million cash bail, was charged with maintaining a marijuana cultivation facility and possession with intent to distribute. He also was charged with theft of services for allegedly stealing electricity to power the extensive system of grow lights.

Two others _ Tuan A. Dang, 35, of Port Monmouth, and Ngoc H. Bui, 35, of Old Bridge, both naturalized U.S. citizens _ were arrested after authorities searched the Millstone residence. They face the same charges and bail amount as Nguyen.

"While law enforcement in New Jersey has encountered high-tech indoor marijuana growing operations in the past, we have not seen anything to match the volume of production of this criminal enterprise," state Attorney General Paula Dow said.

The attorney general's office said it has not been notified that any of the suspects has retained legal counsel.

horribly stupid by the grower to have done what he did with the remains

  6. WHAT POSSIBLE REASON DO YOU NEED 3000 PLANTS??

    greed is the killer here.

if i was in a house and someone was burning stems and leaves... i think id kill them for the good of the planet and drug trade.

  7. Yeah, no reason to have that many plants. I have no sympathy for someone/people that grow for greed. It have to be god awful hard to hide 1000 plants, and I thought having 3 was sketch enough.

  8. lol my cousins DEFIANTLY knew this guy

  9. Thats insane. When I was driving I saw a bunch of police cars and started getting worried since I didnt know what was going on. I guess this is what they were going for.

  10. Whether the guy was actually burning by-products or not is up in the air. If he was the guy is an idiot and really screwed himself over. But I don't see why he would do something stupid like this if he had tight enough game to be growing that much weed. And lets be honest he prolly has a lot more the $65k hidden somewhere else where the cops aren't going to touch it. I am sure he was under surveillance for a while and the cops were waiting for an excuse to bust him.

  11. I'm in Jersey, and I'd bet money this is going to be bad for my hookups...

  12. another grower will just rise in his place. This isn't going to stop anything. The cops don't realize that. I guess they don't care either as long as they keep getting paid.

  13. this has been on my mind also.
I cant help but wonder if the "smell from the fireplace" was just a creative way to trump up some probable cause?

not to mention, you gotta be pretty fucking stoopid to burn shit in the fireplace of your grow-op.
Asians are know for a lot of things, stupid is not one of them.

I definitely think there's more to this story.

on another note, any "draught" this causes with be brief at best.

  14. Wow. It seems that, for being such a huge criminal enterprise, dude made a huge amateur mistake.
