    JUSTICE RETIRING

Superior Court Justice Jean Burling of Cornish notified the Executive Council last week that she is leaving the bench under early medical retirement. She had been a judge since 1999.
Her husband, Sen. Peter Burling, said she made the choice reluctantly, but said her debilitating migraines make it too difficult to continue in the job.
    A BIG WEEK FOR HEARINGS

Medical marijuana is back, after coming close to passage in the House last year on a 186-177 vote.
This year, HB 1567 bars prosecution for possession of less than a quarter-ounce for medical or personal purposes. So, it would be legal to hold small amounts if one suffers from cancer, or boredom.

It's sad and ironic that migraines are forcing Justice Burling to take early medical retirement, for had HB 774 passed last year Justice Burling may not be forced to retire today. As Dr. Ethan Russo reminds us, "Cannabis has been employed for a variety of medical indications for at least 4000 years, and there is evidence for its effective use in migraine for 1500 years or more".

HB 1567 offers legislators another chance to allow this plant to serve our community, this time less concern over the method of application and a closer evaluation of its actual effectiveness might be more prudent. As the saying goes, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
