Newbie - Need guidance/advice on MMJ - nausea, pain, illness

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by ish*trainbows, Mar 3, 2010.

  1. Hi  I would really really appreciate any guidance, advice, input, etc people can offer. I'm brand new to all of this and am feeling a little lost. I've never used mj before, medically or recreationally. But 3 different doctors have all recommended I try cannabis for my health issues. I had surgery for endometriosis about a yr ago, then was diagnosed with Lyme disease and 2 nasty coinfections (1 bacterial 1 parasitic). I have a whole lotta symptoms, the worst of which include severe nausea, chronic pain (muscle, joint & internal organ), this indescribable raw burning poison sick feeling all over, headaches & migraines, dizziness & vertigo, tachycardia/palpitations & "air hunger" (feeling like u can't get enough air in). I'm in my early 20's. I've been in treatment for the Lyme, etc for almost 6 mos. Because I'm so sick the treatment is very aggressive, a combo of oral meds, naturopathic supplements, intramuscular injections and, starting next week, IV meds via a picc line. All of which makes the nausea much worse.

I'm currently taking 8mg Zofran every 6 hrs for nausea, which sometimes helps and sometimes doesn't. It does not stimulate appetite at all.

I'm super sensitive to pain pills but not in a good way. Even a relatively low dose makes me nauseous and dizzy, but does nothing for the pain. So I break the pills and take smaller amts more often. 1/4 of a 10mg percocet plus 1/2 a tylenol 4 (codeine) every 2.5-3 hours. This barely softens the pain but if I take any more the nausea and dizziness get too bad.

All 3 doctors said high quality marijuana would get rid of my nausea, help stimulate appetite and probably help with the pain as well. While this sounds like a dream come true, I'm nervous to try it because of a bad experience with Marinol. It did nothing for the nausea but gave me a serious mind-f*ck when I went to bed, felt like I was losing my mind, very violent disturbing images, nightmares, etc. I read tho that even longterm smokers have had bad experiences with Marinol since it's just synthetic THC and doesn't have all the other cannabinoids.

So I started looking into the process of getting "medical" marijuana, and all the different strains, and I have no idea where to begin. All the different strains are confusing. I also have very little money, with all my medical bills. I think my doc would write me a rec but then I have to pay $ for an id card?? And then there's the cost of the mmj itself. The good thing is a dispensary just opened down the street, but what I don't know is is it expensive? How much do I "take" at a time? How is medical mj different (in quality, price, etc) from stuff anyone can buy?

Sorry for the looooong post. I really truly appreciate any help people can give me!

  2. Until someone else can come along and answer all your questions, i'll leave you with a little something since i'm short on time.

The reason why you reacted badly to the marinol is in fact because you didn't have the other cannabinoids that regulate and even counter the high doses of thc. Don't worry when you first use the real stuff because as long as you get a good strain which will probably be an indica for your situation all your pain will melt away and i'm sure your dream will in fact come true.

    Good luck :)

  3. Yep, can't judge cannabis from your reaction to marinol. ;)
None of the cannaboids are present and it's hard to judge dosage when taking it in pill form.

Here is a start looking up different strains for different maladies and here are the legalities for all the states with MM (including California), in case you need it. ;)

The staff at the dispensary (if competent) should be able to direct you to their strains best suited to help you. If you read some in this forum, I'm sure you could get an idea of what the pricing is and the California NORML website's FAQ is pretty handy.

Good luck and let us know the difference you find between medicating with Marinol and medicating with Cannabis, if you get to that point.

  4. For whats it is worth, I suffer from extreme nausea. I should say I suffered from extreme nausea, since I started smoking a every night before bedtime my nausea has been reduced from puking at the smell of food to eating pretty well and puking way less often.

I don't have any pain issues so I can't address that for you.

As to the nausea, I have found that just a couple small hits of my pipe every night does the trick. It is hardly enough to even give me a buzz. If you have never smoked cannabis before, start small. Try one hit. Give it some time, you might feel a little disconnected. It will pass. If you find yourself getting hungry, you are on the right track. You don't have to get totally wasted to get an anti nause effect.

I find smoking to be easier than eating medibles, when I'm nauseas I can't eat worth a damn. If you are worried about the effects of the smoke you might want to try a vaporizer, but I would not lay out that kind of money until I knew the treatment was going to work.

MARINOL IS BULLSHIT, even cancer patients report it does nothing for them. You need real cannabis flowers. It will definitly help all of those things. You don't have to smoke it either. You could eat it or vaporize it to avoid by products of smoke.

Cannabis purchased at a licensed dispensary will always be quality, and you can choose different strains for different effects. You don't know WTF your getting when buying off of the street.

Note: there are two main types of bud, sativa and indica. Sativa is a head high, indica is a body stone. While a sativa dominent strain is good for depression and mental illnesses, indica dominent strains are perfect for pain and such.

  6. This is all very helpful. Thanks so much for the support and encouragement :)

    @trueg115 -
haha that sounds pretty darn good. i really hope ur right!

@FenceWalker - great resources! i've only made it thru some of it but already feel way more prepared.

    @BlaBlaBla -
That's great to know that it's helped you so much and you only have to use a little bit. That also helps alleviate some of my worry about the cost, cuz before i had no idea how much you had to smoke in order to get the anti-nausea & pain relieving effects. Is there a particular strain you've found most helpful for relieving nausea?

    @NYCdeisel - good tips, thanks :)

Follow up question for the collective...I can't afford to invest in a vaporizer right now. What is the difference between smoking and edibles? I heard somewhere that smoking is more immediate and short-lived, whereas edibles give a slower, longer-sustained effect. Personal experiences? Thanks!

  7. Smoking marijuana will cause you to feel the effects within a minute or two, and yes it won't last as long, but it'll still be 3-5 hours. I wouldn't suggest using edibles until you're already high and can successfully eat and hold down a brownie or whatever.

  8. Well one thing that should be noted about edibles is that the delta 9 thc molecules get converted into delta 11 thc molecules (not sure about the delta part) which last longer in the body so I find it more helpful if you have somewhere to be and would like the effects to last a little longer. They also have a stronger effect I believe so I would start with smoking/ vaping first because some people are not too keen on the edible "high."

Vaporizers don't have to be too expensive, $150 being a good price for the smaller yet just as effective models. I suggest you invest in one because as far as how much money you will save on medicine it is astronomical. I recently purchased one and it paid for itself within the first 2 weeks by the amount of cannabis I was able to save as compared to smoking.

As to the lyme disease that you have i'm pretty sure that the 5 main cannabinoids will help to kill the spirochetes. Not too many studies have been done on it so it may be hard to find, but I remember reading one from a database a while back that stated that THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, and CBN are all very potent anti bacterial wise and could help in the fight of lyme.

Basically. Sometimes an edible is more convenient, But:
It can take 2+ hours to fully kick in and take effect. The effects usually last fir 6+ hours and it's more if a body effect. Smoking is the least efficient way to ingest cannabis although it sure is convenient. Get a small glass pipe such as a chillum with a small bowl hole. The cheapest vape that actually works well is the Magic Flight Luanch Box. It's simple and it will pay fir itself in no time with the amount if cannabis you will save.

  10. Wow. That alone is reason enough to try it.
I had no idea! I just thought a vaporizer was a way to still inhale w/o the smoke. You guys are a knowledgeable bunch! :hello:I don't know why I didn't get into this a lot sooner... I'll try the small pipe/bowl for my first go at it. Is it as efficient & effective as vaporizing? Or good enough for while I'm trying it out for the 1st time?
    Thanks again!

  11. Yes its a sure fire way to feel the effects. Not necessarily as effective medicinal wise but it'll do the job. You see with vaporizing you don't get all the toxic compounds that are found in any burnt material because it is only the cannabinoids and thc that are ingested. Most say the vape high is more clear headed

  12. For Pain and Nausea:

    Silver Haze
    Afghani #1
    Blueberry
    Hindu Kush
    HOG
    Lavender
    Legends Ultimate Indica
    Maple Leaf Indica
    Strawberry Cough
    TX
    White Rhino
    Lollipop
    White Russian
    Romulan
    Sadhu
    Black Vienamese

These are just a few strains that list both symptoms. These strains supposedly have helped people who have these symptoms.

Best bet though is to go in to a dispensary, and let them show you what they have that is good for your symptoms. This list will be good in the event you want to grow sometime.

Hope that helps... Also, ask your doctor if it is nerve pain or muscle pain, in the event that it is nerve pain you would use different strains.

    Love to you,
    Sammy

  13. It's good enough for now while you get aquanted(spelling?) with Mary jane.
Vaporizing is completly different then smoking, that's why people get flamed when they say shit like "I smoked from my vaporizer" since it makes them seem totally ignorant.
Use very very small doses while smoking so you don't get overwhelmed. It's a good idea to have a light snack prior to smoking and to always stay hydrated during AND after smoking.

  15. Wow that's a lot of strains! thanks for taking the time to put that together :) i agree i think my best bet is to talk to the dispensary people. they just opened one literally down the street and the guy who owns it is an RN & is apparently knowledgeable. My pain runs the gamut, becuase of the nature of the disease - muscle, nerve, joint & organ pain, which is i think why pain meds no matter how strong have never worked. but from what i've heard from people here i'm sure i'll find something at the dispensary to help me!

    Good tips thanks!
thanks for joining the discussion! i've been blown away by the response to my question. i was feeling kinda lost going in to this, which is why i posted my question here, and now with all this awesome info, care & support I feel very prepared!
and good idea, re bowl & vaporizer. i looked at the Magic Flight Launch Box that NYCdeisel told me about and it looks perfect for when i get comfortable & have a lil more moolah.
I will most definitely post back once i've had my first experience!! even if it just lessens my nausea & pain i will be so happy. if it does more than that i won't know what to do with myself! :D

  16. I took Marinol and ran repeatedly into the door facing whilst trying to get to the toilet:eek:. It was painful, and embarrassing. With your medical cannabis, you can select the most effective strains (this may require trial and error, since everyone responds differently) and closely moderate your dosage to get the best therapeutic effect. Sorry about your chronic Lyme's, I have axonal neuropathy which has some similar symptoms. You should have much symptom improvement. I have the Launch Box and its a very handy little item. Opiates often fail to work on neuropathy symptoms, they do not work for me either.

That's amazing Op, I'm glad you feel so much more confident and prepared about trying some REAL medicine. I'm positive that it will help you tremendously once you find some strains that work well for you. I'm very happy that my advice helped you as well, I just love to help people!:)
On a side note, I'm actually about to order that vaporizer I mentioned before. Fuckcombustion.com is totally dedicated to vaporizers if you want really specific info.
Like I said a small glass pipe is fine for now and a decent one shouldn't cost you more then $30.
I self medicate using cannabis all the time, even though my state does not have a medical program, it does wonders for my depression, insomnia, joint pain, stress, and menstrual pains as well as any other ailment I may have. Since cannabis is antibacterial, antifingal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant(with many other properties) it's great for cold/flu as well and I even vaporized when I had bronchitis one time along with some antibiotics it was cured in no time!
damn sorry for my rambling!! Honestly, cannabis is my only medicine[I don't even take Tylenol/Motrin/Advil,ect] and I don't take caffeine or alcohol either. It's like my perfect substance. Ah again sorry for the life story I know it won't benefit here(or will it?)
    Good luck ishrainbows!!!

  18. Plus rep for being so helpful to the guy

  19. Thanks for the rep Evoman, I appreciate it. And thank you ish rainbows I just accepted your friend request:D:wave:
