Newbie Grower-Lower Leaves Turned Yellow

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by giamatteo, Aug 25, 2007.

  1. Hey everyone,

I am a newbie grower. Plants are 3 weeks tomorrow and were doing just fine. Checked them out this afternoon, and saw that the lower leaves are yellow and have some brown spots.

I have read troubleshooting guides here and across the net regarding these same symptoms but just need some confirmation please and of course a solution. Also, will these babies survive this?

I'm attaching photos of the one who is photogentic. The other one, isn't... :)

PH levels are fine. Humidity is good and temp goes a bit up but not too bad.

Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks!:p

  2. You started nutes yet?

  3. Hi Alex,

Yes, I started Nute's 1.5 weeks ago. I'm using Miracle Grow All Purpose but not sure if it is the right product to be using.

After I used it, I noticed nute burns on just a few of the leaves so I flushed the plants. I probably screwed up doing that. I did not replace the nutes since then (1 week ago). Then all of a sudden yesterday afternoon, I saw that several leaves had yellowed on me with brown spots.

I do not have a green thumb at all and not sure what the hell I am doing! Any help you can give me is awesome! Thanks!

  4. What kind of soil are they in?
Weed plants don't need to be fed at all anytime before week three of life. Since you fed them long before that you fertilizer burned them. I recommend you flush them. To flush, tripple amount of water per size of pot. So if they are in a one gallon pot for example, give them 3 gallons of fresh, nute free, pH ballanced water. Then don't fertilize for many weeks to come.

  5. As you can tell from above some ppl don't read.

you did good flushing them. seedlings shouldn't be fed until the pod leaves(1st round) start turning yellow. Most strains have enough onboard nutes for 2-3weeks. Then most start w/1/4 or 1/2 dose then ease it up.

You know ph? and knowing soil would help.

I also detest Mirical grow, but that's just me.

  6. Sounds to me like you are going of the deep end.
First hit they took was from early nuting. (whille MG all purpose is OK, just don't overnute and don't nute too early)

Second hit they took was from flushing.
This does not only flush out the nutes but it also leads to pH swings and effectively is some serious overwatering which means less oxygen to the roots.

I wouldn't even bother trying to repair that soil.
Repot as fast as you can, get rid of that soil as much as you can.

Then, apologize to the plant and promise it you'll never do that again!;)

  7. He said they were fed with MG all purpose plant food. Are we to assume they are in MG all purpose soil as well? Regardless urgr8est hit it.

  8. Good advice Mr. Fear.

Hey VTEC. Nice to meet you also.

Now that the forum is cooling back off, maybe we can help some folks here. Then I'll rent a suite at the Biltmore in Atl and throw a pot party:) I'll supply all the weed and live entertainment!

This is what the weed is about. Havin fun w/others!

edit: fear, as much as I don't want to even type flush;) I think the seedling might have burnt up if he had not flushed. Bare in mind I agree w/what you said. I'm just wondering. peace & pot

  9. Agreed 420, fried it would have been!

  10. Sorry, I've been away for a few days... :) I was almost giving up on you all when I saw that things had been busy on the forum. Thanks for helping out.

Ok, I'm guilty for over doing it I suppose. But I've read sooo many different things through out the net, I thought I was doing the right thing. It's a learning experience for sure.

I didn't give them Nutes until the first leaves turned yellow. They were at 2 weeks when I did this. Things looked great, then I noticed some signs that I burned them with Nutes about 4 days later. So I flushed them immediatley. Again, things were great for a few days then all of sudden this showed up. And it was about 3 days after the flush.

The soil I am using is Super Soil from HD. The PH is good 6.3 and have been watering with distilled water. The humidity stays around 33 or so. Temp is anywhere from 82 - 91 (living in So Cal) but mostly in the 84 range. I've also made sure they are good and ready to water.

Using CFL's 24/0. Put worm castings in one pot and none in the other 2. Good ventilation (intake fan and outake fans), with mylar inside cabinet.

They are doing a lot better right now. Should I just leave well enough alone? Or should I repot? :)

  11. That's your call gia.

I might leave it a few days to let the roots beef up, but if you go ahead It will stress a little more. If you think it can take it?This would give it room and new soil. It's a jive and take for real here.

  12. Hey Alex,

Thanks for the info. They seem to doing alot better. The runt is still a runt but both plants seemed to have recovered from all this except for having the yellow leaves as battle wounds. But lots of new growth in the past 2 days.

You're the best... :) And thank you for everything.

  13. You put a smile on an old mans day.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Karma is my way. I also like the true concept of Alloha. (its a way of life, not just hey/bye:))

If you don't mind gia. Could you keep updates or let me know how yot do at harvest? Thanks.

  14. Hi Alex,

I think I spoke to soon. Looked great this morning, then took a look at it this afternoon and the one that is doing the best is now drooping a tiny bit. Temps look good, etc. Haven't watered in a few days. Pots still too heavy to water.

My smallest one (which I started about 2 weeks ago) died this morning as well.

I think I need to re-pot the two plants that haved survived in new soil. Could you please give me some suggestions on the soil to buy and the size pot to get? I want to do it right this time, not half ass or over assed!

Thanks!!! And I will definatley keep you updated on their progress as I feel they are somewhat yours now too...

  15. I just wanted to chime in here with my own experience...

This yellowing happened to me once before with White Widow at around two weeks old. I started them in red keg cups...no nutes...maybe I overwatered them...

In any case, during transplanting them I noticed that they had already developed such an extensive root system. I think they were just suffocating in those little red cups...even at their size. After transplanting everything was cool! :smoke:

  16. Her's what I use. Mind you I buy in bulk, but my mix is easily duplicated w/low cost.

I don't like anything Mirical grow. It's all nute enriched and I rely on nutes I us.

I use to buy sta-green or shultz no nutes, but MG has taken over most chain stores.

    mix goes ....
    16 dry qts peat
    8dry qts vermiculite
    8dry qts perlite
1 oz pelletized lime per qt mix(32ozs or 9cups)

4 gals 1/2 strength nutes. I use ph balanced nute. The lime will set the ph at 6.8 for entire grow.

    no ammendments no bs.

  17. Limited text here, so forgive multiple post.

Now you can easily 1/2 that or whatever. It makes lil over 9wet gls.
you must keep mixing soil in tub to prevent lime from collecting in bottom corners. No skimping. mix hell out it. and no powdered lime will not work, but 4Olbs is 8$ at lowes.

Oh yeah, there will(should be) some water drainage, so make sure not to let them sit in that water.

as for pot size? again, your call. I don't know your grow, but bigger pot = bigger roots= bigger buds:)

    temp 85?

  18. Thanks Alex... I will go to HD this evening and pick everything up this evening. Which PH balanced Nute do you use?

The temps out here in So Cal have hit over 100. I have my a/c on 24/7 but the grow box was still getting warm almost hitting 90 a few times. So I went and got some vent tubing and attached it to my a/c vent where the grow box is and the other end to the intake fan. My temps are now around 78-82 tops. Hopefully this is fine, as hitting 90 in there was not good and I think was the reason for them drooping yesterday.

Thanks again and I will keep you updated. Have a great weekend.... :)

  19. 420Freedme: Hey bud have you ever used Shultz Liquid Bloom Builder 5-30-5. If so what do you think of this for flowering???

    Thanks

  20. I've not used it, but that don't mean it's not good. It's got good N-P-K (I use 9-50-10). Trace elements and micro nutes included? Mg, cal, iron, sulfer...ect? I use Cha Ching. I'm looking for a better veg nute at the moment. I've been using CC from clone to harvest w/great results, so I might just leave it alone;)
