Newbie and Hydroponics system: HALP!

    Sup guys, well since I have a medical marijuana card, i'm able to grow up to six plants so decided to start a stealthy, hydroponics system.

    I've read some how to's and watched a video so I [believe I] understand mostly what it would take to grow some green :)

    So anyway I went to Home Depot and purchased a 400w High Pressure Sodium (clear) bulb, and a 2-way setting timer. What I have to buy now, to my understanding is to buy a fixture with refractive material that is HPS Bulb approved for 400w.

    Also a ballast capable of supporting the 400w load?

    Am I going the right route for a grow system?

    I figure all I need is an HPS bulb with an 18/6 time schedule above my seedling until it grows, and keep it in vegetative stage and make/use clones to determine sex and if it's female, grow some bud-producing clones by switching 12/12 scheduling with the SAME HPS bulb.

    Again I must ask if this is cool or not? I understand that 400w is quite a bit of power but I figured the sun is pretty powerful too LOL

    Hey man.

    The problem with Home Depot is they don't sell ready-to-go hps systems for growing. Therefore, you need to piece together the system yourself. You will need a reflector and a ballast to run the thing. The hps light is most efficient when the bulb is mounted horizontally. Make sure you get a three prong, heavy duty timer. If the Depot hps is looking like it is turning into a hassle, just return it and break down and get one from here: http://www.htgsupply.com/
    Yes 400 watts is a lot of power therefore depending on the size of the room you will need a strong air flow plan. Also check out the book Growing Marijuana hydroponically by Hans.

    I've returned the HPS 400w light as i've concluded that it is way too powerful for a 4x clone grow setup.

    Edit: Alright I returned the previous timer for a three pronged heavy duty one, it has 3 settings but I figure I only need two :]. This htgsupply store is awesome. $120ish for a full setup? A TON better than fabricating your own!

    good luck man, let me know how the hydro-acquisition goes. also, getting a med card lets you grow plants or is that a separate card?

    why do u wanna have it all stealthy if you have a card? if i had one i would designate a special room in my house for growing and have the best growing room.

    I live with my parents, student. I cannot afford a place of my own at the moment otherwise I wouldn't care, but c'est la vie right? When I have my own place I won't care, but for the time being, I feel that wasting my money on weed would be more wrong in my parents' eyes, as opposed to growing it.

    Really my parents don't really care what I do, so long as i'm not getting into trouble :p

    But i'm keeping it simple: What they don't know can't hurt them

    In California, once you obtain your Marijuana recommendation card, depending on what your county's regulations are for Medicinal Marijuana Patients, you are able to grow up to 6 mature plants, or 12 immature.

    Bud, even though you have a legal right to grow, its still bad karma to grow in somebody else's house without there permission. I recommend that you get permision from them first!

    Yeah I know, currently i'm searching for an apartment so my friend and I can live together :D
