New to Growing!

  1. I've been looking up ideas on trying to get a good sense of what may or may not be in the realm of possibility for my current grow room size and so far the City has been the most useful. I've been thinking about it for a while and this is all I've been able to come up with so far.

My grow 'room' is only a Rubbermaid container with the dimensions 26''x18''x18''. I'm thinking that i'll only have about a 2 plant max and a budget of around $100. My plan is to make a carbon fiber filter with fish tank filter inserts and keep it together with some mesh. Petsmart sells 3 'AquaClear activated carbon filters' for less than $10 a piece so I'll probably but a few of those. I think I'm going to get a few CFL light bulbs because they're not as hot, and with such a small growing space that might be an issue if I use HPS. I know I'll need 6500k for when my babies starting vegging and a 2700k for flowering, but i was wondering if there is any harm in using them at the same time as apposed to switching them when I'm done vegging?

I think I've pretty much got germination down but just to re-cap- I'm going to wet a paper towel until it's slightly dripping, then put the seed in the middle, and put all that in an air tight container in a dark place on top of something, like a computer or DVR, to keep it warm and humid.

Then for vegging I'm planning on using an 18/6 light cycle. I don't have much of an idea on the brand of soil or fertilizer I'm going to use, but from what I've read pretty much says a 20:20:20 ratio of N:p:K but with a little extra nitrogen is perfect. I'm going to top my plants but instead of cutting the meristem (because with my green thumb they'll die) I'm going to bend it over and tie it down. I think it's called the LST method? I'm not too familiar with it, or any method for that matter hahaha, so any advice or suggestions would be great!!

And finally, flowering! I'm going to use a 2700k CFL bulb and a 12/12 light cycle. I don't know if this matters, but during the dark hours of my plant's life will be pitch black, is that a bad thing?? I'll have a fan or two on at all times blowing that just barely grazes the tops of them. I read that by watering only when the soil is completely dry, up to an inch deep, then the THC is more potent. I'd believe it because in theory the THC would re-hydrate the plant from its mini drought, but I'd rather have some feedback on that before i try anything too juristic on my first time. For my fertilizer I'm going to switch over to something with more potassium, so I'll be looking for one with 15-30-15. I have no idea how often to fertilize though so i was just going to do it every 2-3 waterings. I know it's very easy to over fertilize a plant, is that frequency too much?

Like I said, I don't even know if it's possible with such a small grow space but any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance to any contributors!

  2. Its possible to grow in that amount of space with CFL but I'm not sure how productive it would be.
I don't think you'd have enough vertical room.

Could you not set aside a few square feet of fall space for a tent?

I have one of these and its fantastic -
Secret Jardin Dark Street DS60, Green Spirit Hydroponics

How many Watts does your 2700k CFL use?

I have a E40 hanger in my vege room that sometimes runs a 2700k 250w - seems to work well with the metal halide.

  3. Wrong place for this. But I'm here. if your using bottled nutes then you don't need to worry to much about what is in your soil to provide you N-P-K and ph levels. Growing Organically is a way people go about using natural resources, making there own soil of compost and adding things such as dolomite lime, earthworm castings, guano (high in nitrogen) Lots of things you can add for organic nutrients. You don't seem to be heading that direction with your fert. questions though. When i started i used 50% Pro mix, 35% Perlite, 15% vermiculite. I found that mix here on GC.
Some different types of training you can research to get ya going are Sog, Scrog, & LST. Having it pitch black during lights off is a good thing or you'll stress your plants. As for your box in general, i'd find something else lol. A little more height it's just easier to work/care for your babies. If you want to look at some bottles nutrients, then check out fox farm or general Hydroponics. There are many companies though, and people all have there preferences.

    cheers.
