New to growing and want to learn especially about lighting

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by Pegleg josh, Aug 2, 2017.

  1. I am looking at getting my first set up and was wondering what would be better to do one LED setup i seem to be seeing alot of Kind and Perfect Sun Goliath Im kind of leaning towards the goliath but recently people have been recommending me to use CMH lights and was wondering what is the best option for best yield time, quantity and efficiency I dont know many people that grow so im trying to take everything i read with a grain of salt. Please dont respond if you havent used both. I want Wisdom not Knowledge.

Thanks in advance and i really do mean that

  2. I recommend a quantum board. I've run all sorts of lighting in the past and I can't imagine switching back to anything else. I had good results under cmh, but I prefer quantum boards now because of the higher efficiency, no bulb changes and the heat is easier to deal with.

I use cobs from a diy kit as a centerpiece and am having terrific results, just starting on my second grow with them. For a little over 300 bucks i was able to get a setup with 3 cree cxb 3590s on a heatsink with a fan. It comes with all the parts and you put them together according to the instructions. I was very reluctant to get into diy cobs because ordering all the parts individually was so daunting, especially the driver. I was going to buy a prefab made in usa unit and am very glad that I didn't. My ideology is that the important part is the light emitter, and how well the unit keeps it cool; not whether it was assembled in usa, china, or your own home. These cree cxb 3590s are very impressive, much more advanced than what they use in most prefab led units, and you should look into them (or a prefab containing them, which would be really expensive btw). Im not sure if Im allowed to mention the name of the site i got the kit here, but they sell led's rapidly if that's any help.

I use two mars pro 80s as veg lights for my 2x4 tent, and use those same units on either side of my cob setup during flower. With the switches on the mars pros i can use the veg setting on my seedlings, then both switches when they get bigger, then just the flower switch when i have the cobs in the middle.

I gotta tell you, Having all these leds (especially with switches) is very convenient and gives me some real versatility. For example, last grow i did two different autoflower strains in the same tent. one started flowering later, and got considerably taller than the other. I was able to simply raise one of my mars pros and my cobs while keeping the other mars at the right height above the shorter plant. If i had a single light source, like the hps i used on my first grow, or a cmh i was tempted to get, this would not have been such a convenient problem to fix.

Also, even in my 6 foot tall tent, overhead space can become an issue depending on where the flowering stretch stops. For that taller autoflower, i was able to rig the leds to the very top of the tent, leaving a few inches for air intake, so that the light emitters were just 6 inches from the top of my tent. This really allowed me to maximize my grow space.

Im not trying to sway you one way or another, just sharing my experience with lighting.

You want to have 2:1 blue spectrum to red spectrum the stronger blue light is beneficial throughout the growth cycle especially for micro grows. Blue light keeps them from stretching
