new r.o. system question

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by clonezone, Jan 8, 2013.

  1. I just got a new reverse osmosis 5 stage filter system from aquasafe . Ca. It seems like its working properly and the water tastes great, but when I measure the ph of the purified water its around 4.5. The water is around ph 6 unfiltered. I was expecting the ph of the filtered water to be closer to 7, but instead it has dropped pretty low! Is there something wrong with my system? or is this normal? If so, just ph up adjust and use it ? I don't have a tds meter so can't check that. My ph meter is calibrated correctly.
    Thanks for help in advance!

  2. Anyone else wanna report the ph of their r.o. system output?

That's a common misconception. RO water isn't the same as distilled, which DOES have a neutral pH.

    Don't worry about it :).

EDIT: And YES! Finally someone else who loves the taste of RO water! :p

  4. You should chuck the first 200 litres of RO water you make because it might contain stuff from the manufacturing process

Try measuring the ph of the water again after you have let that much water run off

  5. Ya it said in the installation instructions to fill and empty the storage tank a few times before using the water. I did that and let it run for quite a bit more before using.

  6. yep for sure there is nothing wrong with you unit after 10 gallons you should be fine

  7. seems strange to me, my RO water is bang on 7

The PH of water is 7 so there has to be something in the ater to bring it down to 4.5, thats the same acidity as apple juice...

  8. So this is the problem, or situation going on with your system. All, or most water produced by reverse osmosis systems produce slightly acidic water, which isn't at all bad. If you want to produce pure alkaline water, with a pH of 7, get a DI resin canister and resin beads, or the complete kit. This will make your water alkaline. I also have a system from Aquasafe, except I got the Maximus instead of the Home system so I could have alkaline water, but it isn't a big deal. Great systems, and would never go back to tap or bottled water. Click here for the kit I am talking about, if your that concerned.

  9. Assuming your system is new I bet your ph will level out after you use it some. Once the membranes and filters have some use I bet it will change

  10. I did some reading and it seems that the reason for the low ph is that the ro system I have will remove dissolved solids but won't remove dissolved gasses.

Apparently once all the dissolved solids have been removed, the only thing affecting ph left is the dissolved gasses. Which is mainly carbon dioxide.. which I gather reacts with water forming carbonic acid which lowers ph.

There's a bunch of other mumbo jumbo to explain it further.. but whatever I'm satisfied my system is working fine.
