New grower looking for advise

  1. image.jpg I've been reading a lot about topping and am not sure if I should still do it. I planted seeds April 12th in Colorado and now I have two monsters in my backyard. One is a little over 5 foot, and the other is about 4 foot. I have never grown before and have just been googling for research, and I can't find the answers I'm looking for. Can I still top them? Should I top them? How long until they start budding? How much will they produce?

  3. Your plants look good I would just leave them the way they are

  4. I agree, it's a bit late for topping... They look great to me. You could top now but I'd leave it alone personally... As far as flowering goes the rule of thumb is usually as soon as there is less that 14 hours of light they will start to flower (give or take, other factors like genetics and temp can't play a part in that as well in my experience). As far as yield goes that's hard to say. Nutes can play a part in that, pests also can. I'll throw a number out for fun though, I'll say 18 Oz for the 5 footer and 15 Oz for the 4 footer... Either way it looks to me like you've done a great job on your first grow... Good luck on the rest of your season!

  5. Fer sure! I didnt mean they look bad at all, they look healthy af to me.

But I would imagine after some flowering that they will be competing for light a little bit, no?

  6. Right, right... They are a bit close, I'd probably lst as opposed to topping this late. Maybe just try bending and trying down to keep them a bit away from each other? If you have the resources id also cage them. That'll give them extra support as well as get light to more parts of the plant... I dunno if that would work in the portion of the plants that are close to each other but with a cage you can train them very easily. It'll also give great support for heavy buds and create support should there be a storm. I've lived in Colorado twice and you know what they say, if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes, it'll change, lol

Here's a shot of my blue dream and candyland... I trained them to keep them short and increase yield. I'm limited by how tall I can go. Of course these were all topped and lst'd from the start, once they were in their final pots I threw the cage up and continued training. I see you are in the ground of I'm not mistaken but it works in ground too... Hope that helps...

  8. I about wet myself when I read this quote. I'm a first time grower and have 7 plants that are between 4 to 5 feet tall (2 of them look exactly like Beal's plants) , plus 5 smaller ones between 1 to 3 feet. Being my first grow, I was going to be happy if I got a few ounces total, but it sounds like I set my bar way too low. This is so exciting! Beal, be sure to post your final weight so we can see how close Zero predicted it. I cannot wait for October!

  9. Well don't let me be the final word, like I said there's a lot of factors involved. The last time I personally had 4-5 footers I believe they put out right around 3/4 of a pound and some strains more... My ak's produced a bit more and they stretched another foot or so once they started flowering... Since then I've topped every time indoor and outdoor. I never run too many plants though so I try to maximize my yield given the space I have. Legally I only have 100sq ft. so I gotta make it count... Good luck on your harvest, hopefully you'll be happily surprised...

  10. Thanks for all the helpful tip guys. I thought I had given then enough space, but they grew a lot bigger than I expected. For my next grow, about how long should I wait to top them? I have plenty of space for them to grow. How much of a difference in the yield is it when you top it?

  11. With more space, maybe 3ft center, 6ft circle, proper soil wether that be a super soil or a good starter mix like ffof, roots organic, etc. using bottled nutes/teas, topping, lst, and caging you can go really big. I top at the 4th to sixth node, it literally almost doubled previous grows... You know you've gone big when you gotta throw a second cage around them to support big sticky buds. You'd want to start them in February, early March indoors and have them veg a couple months before going outside. I would say a greenhouse would work with some supplemental lighting but you've still got snow falling I'd imagine. (I've lived in CO but I've only grown indoors there)

There's a YouTube video by jorge cervantes (my hero) called, "grow cannabis, the green giants of California" now these guys are top notch growers, the elites, double digit plants takes a tremendous amount of knowledge and skills... But it gives you a good idea on how to grow monsters... Its some really sexy bud porn, lol...

  12. Last thing, I dunno if you have any grow books but back before the internet when times were simple, lol, this is what I studied, practiced, and learned from... This is the newest addition which is almost the same as the first one I bought... I keep it handy as a general reference guide... I'd recommend any grower grab this or ed Rosenthal grow guide... These guys paved the way for alot of us when everything was still underground... [IMG]

  13. No no no. Don't top them this late. You're only going to cut off yields. Also, your looking for advice not advise ;)
