Jeff Magnum is awesome. This is definitely one of my favorite bands, and is what sucked me into my indie music.
A friend burned it for me, I have yet to listen to it. The lyrics are allegedly really deep, I'll have to give it a listen sometime.
Holy Shit, people should really really take a deep look into the music of Jeff Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel. His lyrics are so inspired and unsettling. The music is basic and dreamy. The lyrics and brass spin you through this world that exists outside of time and spirituality. In Aeroplane Over the Sea has gotten me through some rough times. The album as a whole is captivating. Two Headed Boy and Oh Comely are just completely emotion feeled songs. JM wrote IAOtS almost entirely about dreams he had about Ann Frank and her Family, as well as the rest of WWII and the holocaust. It is such amazing writing, musically and lyrically. Too bad JM decided music wasn't for him, however: He will return. My guess is after 10 years of solitude, he will come back with a completely new style of writing, yet still true to the almost possesed style of singing. On the surface level, NMH can be abrasive and somewhat of a "joke", but once you dive in deep to that album, you get completely sucked in. Take a good listen! If anyone is really into them, I have a bunch of bootlegged shows where Jeff talks about the songs and all. There are some really neat videos of them too, one including an entire performance.
Amazing band, Very good music. JM played hand drums (maybe it was kit drums, it was one of the two) On another band's album The Olivia Tremor Control-Black Foliage...it's a alright album not near as good as NMH. Check out On Avery Island also a good album by NMH
If you like Neutral Milk Hotel you should check out Margot and the Nuclear So and So's. They are pretty good with a band that has like 10 different instruments.
Neutral Milk Hotel is my favorite band ever. Has anyone read Kim Coopers 33 1/3 book? It's really enlightening. "Engine" is a favorite Jeff Mangum song for me.
