need your thoughts on hid idea

  1. hi every one i had the idea to use hid car lights i can get them dirt cheap i can get the ballast and bulbs. the specs on the bulbs are 35w pout out 3200 lumes in eather 4100k 6000k or 8000k. i already have enuff power suplyes to run 12 ballasts. the power suplyes i have use 3watts of power to use and put out 14volts wich is in the middle of the ballast curve for the cars.i could use 36watts of power and get 420 watts of light for a total of 38400 lumes. the bulbs are metal halide in case some didnt know . let me know what you guys think

  2. There was a thread on this a few months back. The general consensus was that it was a silly idea but if you have the bulbs and ballast isolated from the car there is no reason why it should not work.

  3. for someone to go out and buy all you need to do this it would be more practical to just get a mh system. but if you have all you need already then by all means do it!

  4. You are confused.
What do you mean : 'i could use 36watts of power and get 420 watts of light for a total of 38400 lumes'

Either its 36W or its 420W.
No way on earth 36W is going to output 38400 lumens, more like 3840 lumen.
420W sounds more like it, but a 3W powersupply unit aint gonna cut it.
Also, if it is actually 38400 lumens for 420W then 14 volts is shit.
    420W/14V = 30 Amps.
If so I hope you're growing inside an iglo.;)

So tell me, what are you confused about?

ok im talking about car hid mh lights that run on 12v dc not ac current and what i ment by 36w is thats how much power my power supplys would use.and if you times 35w x12 it= 420 watts of light for a total of 38400 lumes. ok to unconfuse it now my power supply uses 3 watts of power and if you times that by 12 it = 36w so by powering 12 ballast with a bulb rated at 35w and 3200 lumes each thats 420w and a total of 38400 lumes. now if im rong on my math please feel free to re add it up. now if im rite who wouldnt want to use just 36w of power and still get what a 400w mh makes. ans as fare as cost i have the power supplys now and i can buy the hids out of my buddys junk yard for $5 each set 2 ballasts 2 bulbs so it be cheap to get the rest of the bits i need if this will work. im no pro on lights so thats why im asking specs for lights and ballasts are now posted hope this helps
