I just started germination and i was wondering if the way that i set it up if the seed will sprout. First i got 2 damp paper towels and put 2 seeds on the first paper towel than i covered the seeds with the other paper towel and than i folded it in half, than folded it twice more. I put the paper towels on a plate and covered it with another plate so the towels wont dry out so fast. Will this way work or do i need to try another way? 1 luv kandy
Hey...I think all the folding is overkill and well won't help your seeds...But i'll give you a little advice to get you well on your way... Step 1- GERMENATION Though you already seem to have this done gonna explain it anyway. There are alot of methods out there and the good old Search button is key, but I like the paper towel method over the glass of water method (lack of oxygen being the reason). I'd take a bowl(anything can be use this is just what i used) put around 5 layers of paper towel in there and add enough water so that when you tip the bowl around you can just see a little bit of water moving. then place your seeds on top of the paper towel and at 1 more layer of paper towel (wet this layer unilt it is pretty much see threw and u can see the seeds). Now cover the bowl with saran wrap (cling film) or put it in a big zip lock bag and put it in a nice warm dark place (to help with the dark part i just put a plate over the top of the bowl). BTW a good place is on top of your computer case (nice and warn, usually dark) just don't knock it over. Leave it for a good 12 hours and then check on it, don't be worried if you don't see a tap root they can take any where from 12 hours to 2 days to appear. When you see the tap root make sure you have ur soil mix and what not ready. When to plant them (based on length of tap root) varies alot. Some people say 1/16 of and inch some say wait till it's an inch. I tried both on my first grow and they are both about equal so don't worry to much. Step 2- Transplant into Soil Now that ur seed is ready it's time to get her into some soil, first things first if you can use a big pot from the start do so (easier on the plants). Using some good soil, theres lots of recomendations around here on soil types, and packing methods just use that Search button. Though if you just use the direction of the soil bag they are usually pretty good. Anyway once you fill your pot, have wet the soil and are ready to plant with your finger make a whole 1/2 to and inch deep and place your seed with the tap root facing up inside (try to limit the amout of handling of the seed at possible...if u can use the paper towel to lay it in the right place and just nudge it off). Don't worry if the tap roots not exactly upright she'll find her way. Now very carefully cover over the seed with soil (don't pack it in there)!. Alot of people cover there pots to try and keep the humidty and temp up at this point, (i planted into 2 L bottles for my first grow and covered with saran wrap and tape the bottom of the bottle with duck tape so no light could get to the roots). Lighting at this point is iffy some say go for it some say leave it in the dark...I had my lights on em and with in a day I could see a good 1/2 sprout. At this point When you see the sprout come through the soil you know your in business. Time to get those lights in there and let the magic begin. Step 3-Veg Well Now you probably excited as hell cause there are signs of life. Time to make sure it stays that way, depending on how many/budget/etc. Lighting can very alot. From what you said and most first timmers your usually growing 1 or 2 plants, so CFL (compact florecent lights, the spiral lights that fit in regular sockets, sometimes called enerdy savers) are probably your best bet. The soft white will work, so will the cool blue...if you can get once of each that would be good.I'd say for one plant 1-2 23watt rated which=100watt regular should be perfect. Next thing is some kind of grow box, this things range from ghetto to super pro, for a cheap first grow don't go nuts. Use the search button for ideas but basically you need something that is about 12x12x24 minimum for one plant, it should be light leak proof and u'll need a fan for ventelation. Fert won't be needed for around the first 21 days so no real need to worry about that just yet. Just keep an eye on your distance between the bulbs and the leaves, and make sure they have good ventelation. BTW there is a tonne of information about this stuff around here so read around and learn (thats what i did). That should give you the basics for atleast a good few weeks by then i'm sure you'll know all you need to grow. Good Luck on the Grow and if you have more questions just ask, Vokal
