Need an interesting book/novel to read

  1. I've had a lot of free time lately and thought I'd do something productive with it and read a book. Anyone know of any good ones that are an interested read? I love getting wrapped up in a good book but shitty ones start to feel like homework and I can't finish them. Thanks!

  2. I can help you here (maybe) :) Just finished a 4 book reading spree!

    Ok so authorwise:
    Nelson DeMille
    Lee Child
    Douglas / Preston

  3. Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series
    the Harry Potter series
The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers

  4. I'm just about to finish A Confederacy of Dunces, I'd recomend it...it's interesting and can be hilarious at times.

  5. Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke.

I finished it in one night. I think... no, I know you will love it.

  6. anything by Peirce Anthony (favorite- The ignored) everything he writes is fucking twisted!!!!!

    or Bentley Little
(favorite-incarnations of immortality-7 books- each book is set in a world where people preform the jobs associated with the title of each book- in each book we follow a new office holder and see how they find themselves in the position and how they deal with learning on the go.....and of corse all the books are tied together.....everything this guy writes is great! this is just my fav series )
    on a pale horse- death
    bearing an hourglass- time
    with a tangled skein- fate
    welding a red sword- war
    being a green mother- nature
for the love of evil- evil
    and eternity- good

  7. I teach Reading, so where should I start? Ha, really though, it kind of depends on what you're in the mood for, but it sounds like you're up for a good summer read, something not too heavy, but really entertaining.

My favorite summer book: The Stand by Stephen King...great character development, and he can be pretty fucking funny. Also, by him, the Dark Tower series, good shit.

DUNE by Frank Herbert..sci-fi at its best

Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Tolkien...because they are just pure great fantasy

No Country for Old Men: Cormac McCarthy...This man has a crazy, but ingenious, mind.... pretty dark if you're into that, pretty quick read

Eldest: Christopher Paolini ..also fantasy, but nice thick read and is first in series, of which all are great

I'll stop there for now. :D

Too often overlooked is Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver. A very hip Isaac Newton meets Pirates of the Carribean feel to it. Full of sophisticated humor and amazingly epic scenes in plague-ridden London, Newton @ Cambridge, the founders of a fictionalized 17th century MIT, and the passage between Boston and London. First of a trilogy. Enjoy!

Also, I agree on the recommendation of The Stand. Amazing book. Perhaps the perfect summer read (or fall, or winter, or spring). Salem's Lot is also by King, and it is among the most exciting books I've ever read.

  9. Depends on what you are into, man. But some authors I enjoy are:

    Charles Bukowski (Ham on rye)
    John Fante (Ask the Dust)
    James Clavell (Shogun)
    Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse 5)

  10. "World War Z." I highly recommend it. Second on the list is "The Hitchikers guide to the Galaxy" and followed by "The Brother's War" sour it was published by Wizards of the coast, but damn it it is a good fantasy novel. Not nearly as nerdy as you would expect.

My new job has a ton of down time, so I need to get a few books. I have a lot of stuff written down that I been wanting to read, but my local library doesn't have them.

I really don't know what to get. It's hard for me to get into fiction. I can deal with some stuff that's fake, but it has to be at least possible. If it could never happen in real life then I don't want to read it.

edit: there's been so many "what should I read" threads.

  12. Yes! World War Z was a vey interesting read. I finished it about a week ago.

  13. Anything in the James bond series is good i would suggest starting with the first one though
Fleming's writing style really grew up between casino Royale and live and let die

also Eoin Colfer, Jk Rowling, Douglas Adams, Doyle, Hunter S. Thompson, Philip Pullman, JD Salinger, Ernest Hemingway, Alexandre Dumas, Stephen King, John Steinbeck, Michio Kaku
    all good reads

  14. this one is what would happen if a handfull of serious special forces guys decided they had enough of the way the government is run.....and decided to do something about it....
