My grandmother is 71 years old, today while I was at work a man began walking a long the perimeter of her property looking into windows and testing fences. He then preceeded to ring the doorbell. My grandmother did not open the door and asked who it was. The man was in plain clothes and had a rickety car, he claimed to be from the gas company and said there was a gas leak on the property and needed to be let in. She refused to let him in and let my dog out into the fenced yard. I have a big rotweiller/lab that has a terrifying bark but he is a big sweety. He then left. My grandmother called the gas company and they said they had not sent anyone out and there was no gas leak. She called me and I told her to lock all the doors and call the police to send a unit out to patrol the neighborhood. She refused, she didn't want the hassle and was afraid the cop might want to come in and with all the news about cops shooting dogs did not want to risk any sort of incident. Anyways I am afraid the house is being cased and that the burglar might know when I go to work. She is a hippie and refuses to have any sort of gun or weapon in the house to protect herself. The cops have a terrible response time from my experience in the past where it took 30-40 minutes to get a cop to show up after calling 9/11 thats plenty of time for someone to break into the house which has a lot of windows and glass doors. I put a security sign out front but what else can I do to keep her safe when I am at work. I am a teaching assistant and graduate student and am pretty poor my grandmother has very little money as well. What else can I do to dissuade a robber? Has anyone else had this experience? Do these sorts of people usually try again?
