Need advice about parts for new gaming pc

  1. So yeah It's time to build a new pc, my old rig has been running strong since 2011 and I've got failing ram/hard drive so it's time. Problem is I haven't kept up with the latest/best tech out there for my dollar. I know that AMD is far cheaper but I've always been exclusively intel so I really know nothing. I currently have a geforce 1080ti which I am going to use in the new pc and eventually grab another and sli it up, so there is no need to buy a video card I just need to build a system around it. My budget is around 1400$ Canadian, and I will be reusing my old case/CPU cooler/dvdrom.

So yeah I'm looking for the best processor, motherboard, ram, power supply and ssd that I can get for $1400. What would you guys buy if you were in my situation?

  2. What's your current cpu and speed?

  3. You will unlikely be able to re-use the CPU cooler you currently have.
Make sure the DVD rom uses a SATA connection if you want to re-use that part. (A new DVD drive is like 25 bucks.. I recommend using a new DVD drive if you are installing the OS (Operating System) via optical drive. (So that your install does not get corrupted.) If you are installing via flash drive that's not an issue.

    Newegg's Motherboard/CPU combo's are competitively priced.

For a gaming PC you want a CPU that's 4GHz plus. The higher the GHz the better.
A lot of games won't utilize all the cores on a CPU so getting a 16 core CPU is very unlikely to give you better gaming performance.

For the hard-drive look into M.2 hard drive's. (Samsung has some nice ones.) If you are going to use a regular SATA drive, I'd recommend Crucial because of the price for performance. For a performance HD look at Intel or OCZ.

I've been an IT Specialist for like 20 years now so if you have any other questions let me know

  9. My Evga 980 Ti died a few days ago, i've never had another part go but my GPU's always tend to die at some point and none have ever lived past 5 years. If the card is in warranty it might be time to sell up.

  10. If they are releasing the new Xbox Console as a unit that can trade out parts, I will probably pick that up, but I own 4 PC's myself, 3 desk top and a laptop... My 2 desk tops are old af, the video cards are from like 2005, they still run perfect... If you are struggling to keep your shit alive, I have found redoing the heatsink helps a lot, but only if you use quality product.

Personally, I have never had a card die on me ever, maybe you have some heat issues or dust or something? @Windy5000

  11. Not sure what i'm doing wrong, all the parts i use are from industry leading vendors.
I guess never re-pasted the heatsink on a GPU although i attempted to repair my 980Ti.

    The graveyard includes
    - BFG 8800GTS (Card that infamously came with lifetime warranty)
    - Asus 6950
    - Evga 980Ti (This one was DOA, ended up getting a repaired RMA card)

I have an Evga 2060 now but will get rid once the 3 series comes out or i near the end of warranty. Thinking i'll build my first watercooling setup when Star Citizen arrives.

  12. M.2 drive will blow your mind. Like a 15s windows boot up.

  13. This is outrageous dude, I wish I had more information for you, obviously there are so many factors that can impact performance, but honestly, there isn't a whole lot of outcomes that are going to just kill a card, unless your overclocking wrong or something, even then, I don't know if you can even kill your graphic card overclocking, I dont ever do it, im always scared of wrecking my shit.

  14. I ended up building a new pc by the way, had it for about a month now, runs great!

    Ryzen 3800x
    Asus Prime X570-P
    32gb Gskill FlareX
    500gb M2
    Corsair CV 650
and I threw my 1080TI in there and got a 144hz Acer 27inch gaming monitor.
