Need a business website

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by SirInfi, Apr 23, 2017.

  1. So my GF is starting a business and wants a website.
What's the best way for this to happen?

I don't want a cheap site, so I money isn't too much an issue.
Also I don't know about designing website either, so easy would be helpful.

  2. 1) Using CRM(e.g, ready to use platforms such as Drupal, Wordpress, etc.) with some customization.
    2) Hiring a freelancer/developer to write it from scratch.(highly NOT recommended)
    3) Using online services which you just need to add your content and only paying some $ per month for keeping it up.
Also if it doesn't have any rocket science behind the scene, a decent HTML template would do the job. (no need to run dynamic server-side stuff)

  3. All of that sounds complicated...

I haven't owned a computer in ages and barely know how to use grasscity

  4. You can use web hosting and registry services. That will host your website and register the domain name. Then you probably have to write the content yourself in html/css.

There's also a highly recommended website called squarespace. That's pretty much drag and drop as far as content goes. If I were to start a business online I'd probably use squarespace. It'll cost you monthly but you wouldn't have to worry about anything else. Good luck to you and your gf man.

  5. Thanks doubled420, I will check that out for sure. Easy is best, monthly charge is no issue. Writing my own content sounds difficult, especially with my own work schedule and hours.

  7. I would use WordPress over Drupal anyday. Drupal is like working with a dinosaur; WordPress is intuitive and she could figure it out herself if she didn't want to pay for someone to set it up for her. I think the best domain site is Gandi.net, many different kinds and super cheap. If she is doing something super large than you might want to rethink WordPress. Will you have your own server? How much traffic do you anticipate? E-commerce? Blog? You will have to transfer domain names to whatever platform/web hosting you decide to use, which will be an extra fee, so if you are on the fence about web hosting registration, lock down your site name first. I have a lot of experience in this sort of thing so if you have a question I'll be happy to help you (her).

  8. It's just a small medical practice, so not much traffic to be honest.
But even 1 client would pay for a months worth of rent!

  9. Drupal is shit.

I sent you a message, man. Whilst fishing is my 1st love, design/coding is a close 2nd. I'll be more than glad to put a smile on your face.

  11. First of all you will need a domain. Theres a site called godaddy that ive heard of that does shit like that.

Then you need to learn html and css, html is like the skeleton, and css is like the body and characteristic of the site. That isnt too hard, but if you struggle there is people for hire on freelance websites.

Javascript and more coding languages should be used for more advanced features if you need them.

Sorry, thats the best i have to say, not too experienced with web design.

  12. Man, what's up with everyone hating on Drupal, it definitely has its places. And Views beat out anything Wordpress/Joomla/whatever have to offer without heavy work

A lot of my work involves CMSes and the way I handle it is, if we want a simple site (Some pages, forms, etc) or a blog-heavy site, we go Wordpress. If it's a more complex website with multiple page structures, integrates other things (CRM, e-commerce etc) we go Drupal. Drupal does require a much beefier server to serve reasonable traffic though

  13. Register your domain on GoDaddy or a similar service. They also offer hosting, and a basic website without a shopping cart, forums, or other advanced feature is really rather inexpensive. Then just find a broke college kid to build it.

  14. Good luck with the process and future business
I just stared 2 businesses this year and it's hard but worth it PM me if you need brainstorming backup

  16. Thanks!!

She started a site, I forget which. She didn't even need it though because her customers are bringing in their friends and family, she's getting overbooked already.

I should of went to school for accupuncture man, she earns about 60 to 120 per hour putting needles in people and letting them sleep for about 45 minutes.

  17. Don't use e-host, I had them for a year pain in the ass. Bluehost is pretty good and 2 dollars a month.

damn son they have an acupuncture school around here but it's really expensive, they are hardcore and you have to learn Mandarin and all the herbs

  18. For an acupuncturist website you don't need anything more than wix or squarespace.

Go to Fiverr and find someone to get all the basics setup for you for $100

  19. Check Shopify or Wix website builders . Both are pretty easy.
