My tincture reduction apparatus

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by RiseOfTheTriad, Oct 22, 2020.

  1. Yes, I could of bought a water distiller but I like to keep an eye on things.

Some of the copper I already had so this wasn't to bad of a build.

I do setup an ice water bath in the middle of the long rod and keep ice around the end jug.

Very close to 100% recapture on its first run. Not bad for small batching it.[IMG][IMG]

  2. I like it, Not the gas open flame though.
Can you explain the part about how you do the ice bath to middle pipe as it is recovering?

  3. Nothing like a bit of ingenuity. But you're asking for trouble with the gas. It's a precarious setup that's not real stable. Be careful and at least have good ventilation. I wouldn't do it.

  4. Better off making a small copper still

  5. I think a good modification would be to solder a nipple to the top of the lid so that you could just put a hose on it and run that through your ice and into the jar. You'd be able to make a few coils to help cool it. :)

  6. I have a 5gal bucket with a worm I could use but thats over kill.

Basically I I have a large mixing bowl under the long pipe that I keep ice water in and feed it over the copper to keep it chilled like a worm.

I do plan on using my electric hot plate but for a test run with such a low volume risk was very low.

  7. I'll stick with my Source Turbo to reclaim. I'm too old for explosive vapors.

  8. I'm a sucker for gadgets but just can't come off the coin for that yet.

Give me my foodsaver and a week and I'll build something close. Lol

  9. Just remember that alcohol vapor is heavier than air. When it boils it the vapor comes out of the pan and goes down, where the fire is. I hope you used plumber's solder, isn't there some precaution about not using electrical solder for plumbing copper stills?

  10. Its not my first still. Yes lead free.

Oddly enough while I heated the water the tincture never really boiled like it did when I did an open pan reduction.

Usually I do this in the garage. This was a test run. The difference in odor and smells from the open pan to this was night and day.

Agreed. We cannot stress this enough for those that don't know better.

Lead free soldier and stay away from open flame. Including no lighting smokes while working.

  11. I do appreciate the way your mind works, we have a lot in common
You can refine your version and make it safer , I like the idea of a small worm added.
    Interesting for sure.

  12. Honestly the worm isn't really needed. An aquarium water pump and bowl of ice water on the long rod works. Technically you could run it to another sealed mason jar and lose essentially no vapors.

I guess if I wanted to compact it I could use the worm over the long pipe. I'll tinker. Maybe make something steam punk looking. I would like a temperature probe hole with a gasket to monitor the tincture temps

Found my electric hot plate and cleaned up the first run.[IMG]

  13. Also to add. Because I try most everything I think of.

Vegan capsules don't hold tincture. [IMG]

  14. So today my brain has been wandering.

I was thinking about the extract craft source turbo. I wondered how I could make that small scale.

All I would need to do would be to seal on both ends of my setup and add a vacuum port.

So the big plus to the source turbo are temp control, lower temp process, timer and vacuum.

Things you may have already that can do this. Sous vide for heating the water. Foodsaver to create the vacuum.

Now if I can design a mason jar to mason jar setup that can hold a vacuum.

  15. @PsychedelicSam what micron filtering would you recommend to vacuum filter the alcohol tincture?

I have 1/4" copper on the way and will have a worm built shortly.

I have 12 copper rounds that fit mason jars to play with as well as silicone gaskets.

The one thing I have yet to decide on would be the way to connect the jars.

Quick connect or something removable would be nice. It just has to be distillation safe and good for a vacuum.

Backwoods vacuum distillation at its finest.

  16. I'm not real sure what filter would be best if you're using a buchner and vacuum. I know they have all kinds but I would think a maximum of 25 microns which is what a paper coffee filter is. I've never understood the coding on those buchner filter papers but I would think you'd want something smaller than the 25. I've only ever used the coffee filters, though.

Sounds like you're getting into your little project there. :)

  17. What can I say. I'm bored.

Guess I need a job or a woman.

Anything worth doing is worth overkill right?[IMG]

  18. Basic planned layout.

Hose line joints are planned to be replaced with food grade high temp silicone line.

Things I need. Vacuum gauge and switch.

Aquarium water pump or garden hose adapter.

Just about ready to vacuum test.[IMG]
