My stems are turning reddish, please help

  1. I’m new to the GC forums and a noob at growing so I’ll take all the info I can get. I started 6 plants a month ago 3 cuvée, 3 cheese quake (TGA). I started them in rapid rooters and forgot to check ph when i transplanted them into pro mix bx 2 weeks ago. I noticed on both ends of the fan leaves stems a reddish / purplish colour and within a few days the whole stem was discoloured. So I watered them again making sure ph was 6.1 and the stems are still changing colour. Im going to be putting these plants outside in organic soil so I their under t5 light in my basement, temps are 60 at night. Please help!!!

  3. I kno it’s not horrible but I don’t want it to turn horrible. And not knowing what it is or how to fix it is bothering me. Will it continue to get worse, Or go away on its own, I don’t kno.

  4. Could be normal could be ph could be strain genetics.

  6. Give them a few foliar feedings of epson salt. That might perk them up.

  7. What are your night-time temperatures like? Strains that have genes that originate in mountains can often turn purple when the temperature drops too low. The purple color darkens the plant so it absorbs more heat than a "normal" green plant. (Some wild mustards do this too.) Ever hear of "Purple Kush"? It's one of the mountain strains of cannabis that does the color change in cooler weather.

So this may not be a real problem, just a reaction to low temps and genetics!

I have had a few plants over the years that had an extreme form of these genes, so that if you took a clone, the cut site would "bleed" red sap! :eek2: Made for some dark, and dank, buds!

  8. Tbone Shuffle what will Epson salt do? how much per gallon should I use and do I need a certain Epson salt? That sounds like a lot of questions sorry.

  9. Thanks Storm Crow my night time temps are low 60’s. I wouldn’t be worried so much but it looks like a problem the discolouring is just on the top part of the stem the under side looks normal

  10. Epson salt is pure magnesium sulfide salt. It's a good source of both magnesium and sulfer. Those are the 5th and 6th most consumed elements by cannabis plants. Most plants like about 2% of their feed to be both magnesium and sulfer.

Foliar feeding is more efficient then feeding from the roots. You can recover a plant more quickly with foliar feeding then root feeding. You can only do it in veg really though if you want to prevent mold. The most common deficiency that can cause reddish stems is mag deficiency.

The directions for plant feeding will be right on the container of epson salt. Make sure you buy a pure form that says it's used for plant food.
