Since it appears the atheists and religious/spiritual cats, at least a large number of each, cannot converse and debate at a level above gorillas competing for the Alpha-male spot, I propose we seperate Spirituality and Philosophy into 2 sections Please vote, and I will send a PM to SuperJoint after the thread builds some momentum with a link to this thread so he can see what we've decided so perhaps we can have the 2 seperated. This would likely result in a large amount of threads being deleted, or perhaps just keep them in 1 section and a mod could move them as old threads pop up. Or fuck it, this section is essentially the same threads and debates being posted over and over again, so it's not like they wouldn't resurrect at some point anyway. Vote away blades
True, but in philosophy people could still debate about God not/existing, and in spirituality it could be just threads about religion/spirituality for those who believe and practice in these creeds. Because how often does a blade make a thread about his religion or his beliefs only to be slammed and flamed by atheists who aren't of his creed at all, and post merely to mock him/her and start problems? For example the thread about "ARe there any other Christian tokers" is mostly atheists asking him questions about the contradictory nature of his religion, or saying "FUCK CHRISTIANITY IT'S EVIL SO FUCK YOU FOR BEING CHRISTIAN" and HARDLY ANY actual Christian tokers discussing the actual point of the thread. I find it pretty fucked up that if anyone were to flame like this for anything else they'd be banned, but it just flies without problems in here.
It makes sense... It's kinda unattractive coming to a forum where any topic about God or anything spiritual is bombarded with "not real" and "unicornz and leprechauns" i mean when i first came here i didn't expect so much rejection on a forum marked spirituality and philosophy
yes but if they were segregated you'd have less of the folk unattracted and repeled by the idea of spirituality
I don't really care. I always discuss spirituality here and most of the time stay out of arguments. Why can't people over 18 have a respectful discussion? It doesn't make sense to me. "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all." ^ It always works, I don't care how cheesy it sounds. - peace, joy, love, and light
This is a fair proposal, and I would not mind seeing it go through at all, but I did move it back to General Feedback where it has much more of a chance of being noticed by those who run the forum.
In all honesty I think 90% of the people on this site are going to do that very thing. The problem isn't the religious posts being mixed with philosophy. The problem is the majority of the forum doesn't agree with religion. And for somebody like myself, I don't go to specific sections other than growing. Otherwise I'm usually just looking at the new posts and seeing if I can answer people's questions. Occasionally a religion related thread pops up, I poke in... and more often than not the poster/s are asking for people to discuss their religion. Even Christians and people of other religions within their own religions disagree and flame each-other. I guess overall though separating them would at the very least lower the amount of hate. I'm all for it if GC doesn't have to work too hard to do it.
My added suggestion: Make a section, which only is accessible by certain users. These lucky users could only get access after they reach 500 posts, as this section should be for people who at least dedicate time to discussing philosophy in proper manner. Two suggested section topics: "Grasshopper Spirituality & Philosophy" These can also have sticky threads with standard issues discussed, to get peoples minds going. "Sensei Spirituality & Philosophy" Deeper conversations, hopefully much lesser threads, with more participation. think about it.
I'm all for this- but for slightly different reasons, personally god and religion is a tired subject, its interesting but there are plenty more interesting things and every thread here seems to always go back to religion or god or universal love- and I say that the reason behind that is exactly because these two subjects are combined. And if it doesn't go down to that it dives into all these vague as shit rants or all these claims that are not backed up at all and go back to the whole "those are just my beliefs" cop out- which is pretty damn ridiculous for the philosophy section if you ask me. You cant seem to make any progress without either the militant athiest (more-so the immature ones) or those claiming the only answer is this one thing taking over the thread and both calling everyone else ignorant. I'm not sure why these sections are together in the first place- if anything philosophy should be with the science section (if we must combine sub forums) because they both promote logic and correct reasoning. Although I doubt it that this will stop the christian bashing- this is the internets favorite subject after all. But I dont really care about that.
Just wanted to add, I would rep but I gotta spread the wealth. I definitely agree, and thank you for finally mentioning it.
I voted against it. I have suggestions for names for such a forum, though. Under the "best" circumstances (ie. challengers don't just follow religious posters into this new forum), most of the new threads will be circle jerks. So, suggestion #1 "Totally Heterosexual Sin-Free Circle Jerks" Under slightly worse circumstances, there might be a lot of friction between religions as people divide into cliques circle jerking over their specific faction and then step into the ring to fight over whose made up beliefs are actually the truth. So, suggestion #2 "Thunderdome" and suggestion #3 "Holy Wars" ps. Can we have a separate forum for Idealists and Materialists and Dualists? I mean, idealists and materialists don't agree and dualists ... well if we're making a religion thread, I suppose they can probably inhabit that one. Maybe we can also have forums for Ethics and Epistemology if we're going to create one for Metaphysics (and lets face it, that's what this would be when the religion challengers get involved). Spirituality is basically just philosophy that incorporates the untestable.
Exactly. There's no use in splitting them. It won't change the sometime vitriolic nature of the discussions.
